Our hotel was not far from there on the Avinguda Diagonal. We had walked by this office building during the day to get to the Sagrada Famiglia. During that time, to me it just looked like a giant cigar ;-)
We just had to take another stroll at night to see it with its 4500 LEDs illuminated. That was well worth the walk! Apparently the Torre Agbar is a hommage to Gaudi. Therefore its architect made sure it wasn't going to be higher than the finished Sagrada Famiglia. Impressive!

must see it with the lighting, changing colors of course! very savvy, on the lines of the Gherkin in London, but important and distinct in its own way! the lighting remains till 11 pm. an important landmark around that plaza.

I like it a lot! Every city needs a little bit of modern stuff (and the one I live in DESPERATELY NEEDS IT, but that's a different thing altogether), and this skyscraper is a great addition to the Barcelona skyline. Much better by night, though.

Barcelona, home to the architecture of Antonin Gaudi, is also the home to some absolutely stunning and unique modern architecture. On a trip through the city, you can traverse over 2,000 years of history, from old Roman ruins, to 21st century architectural gems. The Torre (Tower) Agbar is near the top of the latter list.

It is a privately owned and built building, that looks like the giant--ummmmm, torpedo, yeah, that's it--sticking up into the Barcelona skyline. If you are on top of any hill, from Montjuic to Parc Guell or Tibidabo, you can see both the Sagrada Familia and the Torre Agbar, seemingly neighbors in the distance, representing the best of old and new architecture in Barcelona.

But the real reason to visit the Torre Agbar, is to go at night. It is then that this enormous building is transformed into an almost hypnotic light show, of every conceivable color, following patterns that flash up and down the building, go around in stars, in circles, in single and multiple colors, in a seemingly unending display. Each time that you think you have a great photo of a particular pattern, another one appears that you want to photograph. Again and again. Whoever designed the lighting aspect deserves an award for just doing that. I have never seen any other building that compares to what goes on here. I was transfixed for close to an hour, and stopped by again when I was in the area a few days later.

I don't know where some people get their directions from, but this is right outside one of the exits from the Glories Metro stop, or the Glories street tram, which also stops right there.
