Hostal Jardi doesn't try promote itself as something it is not. It is not luxury accommodations but it is very clean, centrally located and the staff is friendly and welcoming. You do have to climb a flight of stairs to get to the reception area, which my husband and I did not think was a big deal but then there is a small elevator to take you to the upper floors. Breakfast is served at an additional cost, if it is desired. I should mention that the hostal is on a small plaza that can be a little noisy but having said that, the windows that lead to our little balcony (which was lovely) were double paned and kept out most of the noise. We were in a room facing the square on the same floor as the reception.

This hotel has a fantastic location which is definitely the best offering at this hotel, however, it is not the only thing going for it. The simplicity of the rooms is reflected in the price, yet they are clean, comfortable and everything you need. Rooms may include balconies or terraces with great views of the cathedral or square. I would stay here again without question. Free WiFi too.

Room Tip: Terrace on the 8th floor is nice with a table for relaxing.

We recently stayed at El Jardi (4 people, 2 rooms) and were very pleased overall. The location is great, near everything. The front desk and cleaning staff are all very friendly and helpful. The breakfast for 6 euros is nothing special, but it is convenient and served in a little room off the lobby, where a computer for guest use is also located. There are stairs from the street to the lobby, which management explains when you book. If you want a room with a huge terrace, be sure you ask specifically for that. We thought that is what we were getting, but we ended up with tiny Romeo and Juliet balconies. They were fine rooms and our stay was short so we didn't ask to move. We found the experience of staying there very good. It was our second stay with Jardi and we'll stay there again if we are lucky enough to find ourselves in Barcelona again!

Room Tip: Get a large exterior room overlooking the plaza

This hotel is in a great location, just a 10-15 minute walk from where the airport shuttle bus drops you off at Placa de Catalunya. It's situated in a small square just off La Rambla and there are plenty of restaurants nearby. Our room had a balcony, however it wasn't big enough to sit out on. The room had a double bed and just about enough room to walk down each side and that's about it as far as space is concerned. The shower in the bathroom was a bit of a challenge for me being over six foot. With the balcony doors closed there was no noise problem from the square below and the air conditioning worked a treat. The room was spotlessly clean and the staff friendly. We stayed three nights and would definitely stay again but for a longer stay would probably want a little more room.

We had a room with balcony overlooking the square. The location of the hostel is perfect. Lots of entertaining things to see right outside from the balcony, so we spent a lot of time just sitting with a glass of wine, people watching. The room was big, air conditioning worked great. More than enough room for 2 ppl (considering the size of other hotels in Europe).

A mini fridge would have been nice to keep our drink and snacks cool.

Nothing bad to say about this hotel. Staff were helpful, and spoke great English.

Room Tip: A room with a balcony is a must!

The hotel is in a great location, with lots of bars, restaurants and shops outside the door. We paid €90 a night for a double room with small balcony/window at end of August. Staff were very helpful and the place was spotless all the time. No fridge in the room and a florescent light but there was a couch, good air con and a strong shower. Would definitely recommended it as a base to explore Barcelona!

Crunched on time after a last minute booking to Barcelona, we turned to Lonely Planet for a hotel recommendation after a late night arrival.
Typically when we look to listings in Lonely Planet, we consider it to be a location recommendation so we booked 2 nights upfront. After arriving, the narrow walk-up staircase and cheap cafeteria felt more like the hostels we were trying to escape versus the hotel upgrade we were seeking. Despite these early warning signs, we foolishly proceeded to pay and step into the elevator that would make a claustrophobic feel like he’s been buried alive…standing up. However, walking into the room was where the [--] really hit the fan. The busted lock on the door, terrible indoor decor, and beds that rivaled the tile floor for comfort were a bad start. The 2ft x 2ft shower required the yoga skills of a stoner hippie, and the drunk at the front desk said he was powerless to refund our money until the managers came back in the morning.
There is no way Lonely Planet isn't getting kickbacks for having this listing. I just think they should include a kickback symbol so readers know what's happening.
