Great location

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed May 28, 2019
Recently stayed at the Hotel Continental with my sister. We booked a room with a balcony overlooking La Rambla. The balcony was small but a perfect place to sit and watch the people move along the street below. There is a very nice market across the street and we found a great wine shop a few blocks away so we were able to enjoy happy hour on the patio before heading to dinner. The hotel provides food and snacks all day long along with coffee, draft beer and wine on tap. We saw people enjoying the beverages but did not try them. The food was good and breakfast was fresh. The rooms were nice and adequate for our stay. There is also an outside courtyard for guests. I would recommend this hotel as a good moderate option.

Room Tip: Consider a room with a balcony with a view of La Ramble

We spent two nights in this hotel prior to a cruise, and we liked it very much. The entrance is lovely and check-in was smooth and friendly. Our room was quite small, frankly, but had a cute sitting area with lots of windows overlooking the Ramblas neighborhood. Room has fridge and microwave, safe, nice bathroom, and a very small closet. Ours had no drawers, but we were only there for a short time so we managed ok.

Staff is great, very helpful with tours. The all-day buffet is very helpful, with lots of snack options, soda, beer, wine, fruit, etc. fabulous olive selection! Not full meals, except for breakfast, but lots to choose from.

The location is just wonderful, with bars, restaurants, shops, coffee, and tours all within easy walking distance. All in all, we enjoyed our stay very much.

We booked this Hotel directly with the Reservations Dept of the Hotel for our two night stay in Barcelona, Post Cruise. It was everything that we had hoped for and even more. Starting with the 20 Euro Taxi Cab ride from the Cruise Terminal to the Hotel...which includes tip. Speaking of Tip......have the address of the Hotel written down or a brochure from the Hotel to show the Taxi Cab Driver....very few of them speak English and it took awhile before we sorted out the address....from that point on it was absolutely smooth sailing ....we arrived from the ship early...a little before 10 am...check in was 2 pm...they took our luggage, tagged our bags and stored them in a secure room which allowed us an opportunity to walk a block up La Rambla and engage the Tourist Hop on Hop off bus to take us on both the Red Circuit and the Blue Circuit for a Seniors fee of 25 Euros.....a five hour sight seeing excursion while we waited for the opportunity to check in..this venture covered Hi Lights of the City itself as well as the famous La Familia Guardia......we got back to the Hotel...handed our keys and found our luggage already placed in our room. As advertised there was a buffet counter set up with meats and breads and sweets....this buffet changed as the mealtimes changed throughout the day. We literally could have looked after our food intake each day if we had wanted to....a snack here and there did us just fine...although we missed seeing the beer and wine on tap in the beverage area...drats. The reception area consisted of a quiet room, a dining room and a court yard area for eating outside ....weather permitting. The people behind the desk were very friendly and helpful...yes, the elevator was vintage but it got the job done....Security was A-1...pretty Hi Tech for an older Boutique Hotel such as the Continental. Our room was excellent, our bathroom was ultra modern and we were not disappointed with choosing the Balcony room for the extra money as it allowed us to sit out with a glass of wine and savor the surrounding ambiance of La Rambla and its daily cast of thousands. Speaking of Cost...by booking directly with the Hotel we were given a 10 Euro discount per night. Please keep in mind that the electricity for the building is 240 Volt so you may have to ask to borrow a converter from the front desk, if they have one left...or take one with you. Location, Location, Location...this Hotel cannot be beat...one Block away from the Hop On and Hop Off Bus, the Subway station, 2 blocks from the Gothic Quarter and Restaurants everywhere. On our departure taxis were always available at street level for the 35 Euro Ride to the Airport...40 Euros with tip. Need I say more....if you are looking and wanting and finding it available...go for it...you won't be disappointed. Penny, Gord, Jan & Ken, Toronto, Canada

This isn’t their first rodeo. They know how to receive you and treat you right. The location can not be beat. The staff is so friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. The free food, beer, wine is priced right. You can get better but not free and not available 24 hours a day. It’s good. Breakfast was very good. The labels on the room controls are a hoot but underscore their desire for you to relax and know you’ll be able to get done what needs doing with minimal hassle. Glad we stayed there.

Taxi to hotel from ship was quick and only $30. Elevator is very slow, but eventually gets you where you want to go. Our room was on the 2nd floor. I was worried about street noise, but there was none. Just the warbling of the pidgeons outside the window. We had an inside room and although small, it served the purpose. They provided a complimentary breakfast and lunch and dinner. Dinner was the same as the lunch. Also complimentary wine and beer and frozen yogurt. We would stay here again but upgrade the room.

OK this is a personal review so contains my views which i accept may not be the views of others, in fact i know this to be true as i have read other reviews before booking this. First impressions were not good at all, the hotel shares it's entrance, stairway and lift with 2 other establishments, at least one of which is a Hostel. This does not make it very secure but with the inclusion of Massive security doors to each floor which are controlled by reception with the help of security cameras and buzzers. These are also controlled by reception for you to leave your floor, which does feel very much like a lock down and something i was not a fan of. The smell of the corridor on the third floor is that of an old musty building. However once in the room, it is very clean and has everything you need with an amazing shower. I'm not a novice traveller at all but everything about this hotel was disappointing for the price we had paid. Our previous 2 trips to Barcelona represented much better value for money although i didn't write reviews back then. Maybe the "All inclusive buffet" will change my mind? No. plastic cups with drinks dispensers for various soft drinks, water, Red and White wines, juice and San Miguel beer. Not a fully stocked bar but it actually was adequate and grew on me as the days went by. As for the food Breakfast was a good cold selection with overcooked eggs 3 ways as the hot option, evening meal was Pasta and meatballs 2 days on the bounce. Location is excellent.
