“We still love this hotel...”
Reviewed June 5, 2011

This was the second time we've stayed at this hotel and again it didn't disappoint. We stayed there for three days after our cruise . As usual the staff was very helpful. They gave us directions for a day trip to Montserrat and Sitges. We were able to use the subway and the trains to get to these places with ease. It was nice to come back to an appealing patio with refreshments that were absolutely free. Then go upstairs to a nice, clean , air conditioned room overlooking the Rambla. When we returned home the hotel asked us if we had left anything behind. My husband realized that he didn't have his watch or ring. I guess the maid found the items left in the room. They fedexed them to us. That kind of honesty is really admirable. I can't say enough about this hotel except to say , I hope to go back again , soon.

What a horrible place! I booked months in advance and so I was dissapointed when I was given a run down, dirty, outdated, small, no amenities (like soap)l room. The ceiling fan was hanging by a thread and the bathroom too small for even a cosmetics bag and DIRTY! After complaining, I was moved for the next 3 nights to an "updated" room. They told me that the hotel was being renovated but they hadn't done my room yet, however the price they were charging me was the same for the renovated room!! (they did discount it when I complained). The hotel elevator broke the 1st day I was there and remained broke for the rest of my stay. The hotel is on the 3rd floor. Management refused to discount the price for anyone, (or so they told me) although lack of an elevator was a huge hardship for many of the seniors . Lastly, dont go for the 24 hour free buffet unless you like raviolis 24 hours a day. There was nothing that even tempted me free or not.

Dear Madam,

I am deeply sorry that your stay with us was totally unsatisfactory. First and foremost we fully understand the fact that the lift was not working during various days of your stay proved to be an inconvenience. We are fully aware of the necessity of the lift, and if for some reason beyond our control it is out of order, we immediately put at our clients’ disposition hotel personal to help with all luggage transfers to minimize the effects of the non-functioning lift, which was repaired as quickly as was able.

It is possible that on your arrival your room was not in the correct conditions something we profoundly lament. We always strive to ensure that all of the rooms are in perfect conditions on the moment our clients check-in.

I am sorry that our 24 hour buffet, of which we are very proud, and which the great majority of our clients find complete, extensive and of good quality, was not to your liking. It is difficult to understand that with the choice of food and drinks you found nothing to tempt you. Our buffet is not like those found in either a restaurant or on a cruise, it is a completely different idea. We do not offer neither full board nor half-board packages. What we do offer is the opportunity of being able to find food and drinks completely free of charge 24 hours a day. When we say free, we mean just that, it is at the total disposition of clients, without limits, self-service 24 hours a day at no extra cost. Of the said buffet our clients are able to enjoy: Spanish Potato Omelette , a choice of tomato, spinach and courgette omelettes. Roast chicken, Bolognese sauce, turkey and bacon mix, shell pasta, Raviolis, vegetable rice, mixed vegetables, potatos’enmascaradas’, lettuce, tomatoes, a selection of cereals, dried fruit, yoghurt, nut chocolate, various types of bread, croissants, ensaimadas, biscuits, etc. Also available are gluten-free biscuits for those who require them. In the drinks section one can find the best coffee in Barcelona prepared by one of the best coffee-machines in the world: express, cappuccino. A selection of teas, orange juice, soft drinks, beer and wine. There is home-made ice-cream, with various toppings, made by one of the best machines from America. To be able to offer these items completely free 24 hours a day disposable plates and cutlery are used, any other way would be impossible.

We are a small family hotel, working as hoteliers since 1898 and we are very proud of the way that we work. Our stall are excellent and serve the public in a way that can be found nowhere else. We are extremely grateful that we have thousands of clients who feel at home while staying with us, and regret it deeply that you are not amongst them.

I do hope that one day we will have the opportunity of compensating your disagreeable experience.

I remain,

Yours sincerely,

Jose-Maria Malagarriga.

Hotel continental is in a prime position on la rambla close to metro 50 metres. I think this is the only thing that goes in its favour, excepting the free beer and wine.

Our room at the back of the hotel overlooked the outside dining area which was noisy til late at night and early morning so we needed to sleep with the external door closed. We actually wanted a balcony room overlooking the street but after talking to guests that did have one they were kept awake most of the night by people on the street . Oh forgot to mention every time a train went through the metro below the hotel you could hear it going past and feel it too.

The room itself was small, old and outdated. The wallpaper was bubbling and peeling, the sink was chipped in places , the toilet leaked constantly and the carpet was worn. When we went to go to bed the sheet had dried chewing gum on it and when we requested a replacement the guy on night shift grumpily brought a new sheet which looked like it had old mascara on it. Oh well.. Apparently some of the other rooms have been renovated and were in better condition than ours. The bathroom was badly set out to the point where you had to sit diagonally on the toilet. Here’s a hint get rid of the foot washer and make room for the toilet

The hot (you had to microwave it) and cold buffet looked like food poisoning waiting to happen with dishes sitting there all day in a barely refrigerated container. Breakfast was plain with lukewarm Spanish omelette, ham and bacon as well as the usual cereals and croissants.

The area around the free drinks was constantly sticky from all the spilt beer, wine and soft drinks.

Of all the staff the young girl on the early afternoon shift was great, really friendly and helpful.

It is possible that on your arrival your room was not in the correct conditions something we profoundly lament. We always strive to ensure that all of the rooms are in perfect conditions on the moment our clients check-in. However I am filled with consternation to learn that you found chewing gum remains in your sheets and have launched an investigation as to how it could have occurred.

We stayed at the Hotel Barcelona during Easter Break this year. We arrived from Madrid in the middle of the week using the AVE. Taking the Metro to the Ramblas was easy. The hotel is just half a block down the Ramblas from the Metro. In fact--we walked out of the Metro, crossed the street and were in front of the door. The hotel is on the second floor, so we took the elevator. I was surprised at the big carved door that swung open as we stepped out of the elevator. We had arrived! The desk clerk spoke English and was very helpful. A nice gentleman took us up to our room and showed us how to control the lights and A/C. The room was PINK!!! Everything was PINK! But that was okay.
It was a quiet room, despite being on the Ramblas which was crowed and noisy. Our 17 year old son has a cot on the floor and we had 2 twin beds shoved together to make a larger bed. There were closets along one wall--with roses on the doors--so did the bathroom door. The bathroom was large with a great shower in the huge bathtub, a bidet, and lots of drawers for our stuff. There was a microwave and small refrigerator in one of the closets. We removed 2 chairs from our room to make more space, but it was definitely adequate for the 3 of us.
The hotel is very convenient to the Metro and the Ramblas. We walked everywhere or took the Metro. The staff was the best! They helped us find places to eat, how to get places and made calls to confirm train schedules and more. The buffet is open 24 hours a day with fresh food put out continuously. The drink bar was also great--wine, beer, soda, water and more. There is a dining area to eat in and a lounge area to just relax in near the main desk. Also a small balcony to hang on and watch the action on the Ramblas. There is a computer for guests to use to check email.
Our first night there was the big game between Madrid and Barcelona. The hotel put out a huge TV on the outdoor terrace and broadcast the game. Great fun!
I highly recommend this hotel. We had a great time in Barcelona and most of it was due to the wonderful stay at the Hotel Continental Barcelona!
We got a discount with our Rick Steves tour book.

Room Tip: We used email to communicate.

The room was clean and the bed was one of the most comfortable I have ever slept in - it is high off the ground so be careful getting out!! We had a balcony room and it was so lovely just to sit and watch life go by on La Ramblas! The free food and drink was great - saved us a fortune, although it is basic (but so tasty, typical Catalan food). Dont be put off by the "eat and throw" paper plates etc - it is an excellent idea unless you prefer proper cutlery and plates of course. You can even take food out with you if you wish. We stayed at this hotel a couple of years ago and the improvements are huge. The only thing I didnt like so much was the fact that drinks were all on tap so you couldnt really make use of the fridge in your room but this is only a minor niggle. Absolutely love this hotel. Staff always happy to help.

Room Tip: Pay the extra and get a balcony room for the view

Myself and partner stayed here for 3 nights and was just what we needed. The hotel is liferally of Las Ramblas and you can walk to all the bars, cafes and restaurants with ease! The hotel itself has basic rooms, a little small but decent bathroom and power shower, comfortable bed, also air con & free safe. Bonus is the hotel offers free intenet access and free food and drink 24 hours including beer, wine, soft drinks, ice cream etc. The food is continental - pasta, breads, tortilla, fruit, paella, cold meats and eggs!
The beach is a good 20min walk, but its a nice walk with lots of outdoor cafes to grab a cold beer or sangria on the way! There are loads of little back streets off La Rambla so you may want to spend a few hours exploring to get your barings when you arrive and locate a few nice places to eat or drink. Would go back to this hotel and would not bother consdering another!
