We arrived after a very long flight from Los Angeles to Hostal Opera hoping for a quiet, clean and comfortable place to leave our things and feel safe in at night while we rested.... this was not it. The rooms are ancient... the photos on their site are misleading. The bed was old and probably full of bed bugs... the bathroom was the best part of the room. And although you expect a lot of life in the surrounding areas (you are at Ramblas after all) the tiny alleyway the hostal is located in is full of interesting characters... loud people and leaves you with a very uncomfortable feeling. We walked down Ramblas and checked out one of the hotels. The room was clean and much more comfortable and quiet so we quickly cancelled our stay at the Hostal and moved our luggage and ourselves to Hotel Arc de Ramblas. Much better and only 20 more euro for the night.

Room Tip: Anywhere else but here.

Will only corroborate what others have written for the most part. Would definitely recommend Hostal Opera Ramblas for people just looking for a clean, safe place to sleep while spending most of their time out in Barcelona. Located right by Liceu Metro station on the Ramblas. Near La Boqueria outdoor market. I had a single with private bath with a window looking out onto the inner courtyard/air space. Quiet, didn't hear neighbors. Furnishings are as others have described; like a college dormitory room. No TV, but wi-fi worked for me. Stayed here once before about 7 years ago; still holds up now. Only negatives are that they will charge you in full for the first night once you make your booking (theoretically refundable) and will want you to settle your final bill the night before your departure.

we were 8 girls in Barcelona, renting an apartment who turned out to be horrible! after the first night we were wondering the city trying to find a decant hotel who is vacant enough for all of us, and that was Hostal Opera.
the hostal is located in the best location - right in the middle of La Ramblas, the best street in Barcelona, close to the Gothic quarter, restaurants, bars, shopping and other tourist attractions.
besides the great location, the hostal is pretty clean and safe. breakfast is not included but who needs it when you are so close to the Ramblas?!

We stayed at this hotel from oct 25 till oct 29 2011. Though we had (in our reservation mail) expressly asked for a quiet room not next to the elevator, we were given a room next to the elevator. They didn't even bother to inform us by mail that they coudn't comply with our demand. Furthermore: there was some working going on in the hotel, so the first morning we were wakened at 8 o'clock by heavy drilling in walls. Apparently they didn't want to wait till a later hour, when all the guests would be gone into the the city.
Our room at the first floor (room nr 106) had had one window, which was heavily barred (so there was no escaping along that way in case of emergency) and there was no daylight in the room since the window came on a very small (6 m2 ??) and very high (5 floors?) empty patio.
On our last day we had to leave the room at eleven o'clock (which is quite normal), but since our plane left in the later afternoon, we wanted to visit Barcelona once again and we asked if we could leave our luggage in the hotel until 13h00. We were told that this was indeed possible, but we had to pay €2 for this. Which was not very customer friendly, since we had to pay 4 x €63 for our stay.
In conclusion I would not advice this hotel as a first choice: apparently one isn't seen as a guest, but more as a milk cow whose wishes for a stay are completely ignored.

My friend and I stayed at this hostal for 2 nights to explore Barcelona. Upon arriving early we were allowed to lock our bags away in a back room while we went exploring. The proximity of the hostal to Las Ramblas, Placa Reial, and the metro are very good. However the side street the hostal is on is a bit seedy. I didn't always feel safe.

Our room had a nice ensuite bathroom. It was fairly clean but had a strong smell of bleach. This place basically reminded me of staying in a college dorm room with its plain decore and institutional coldness. There was certainly nothing fancy about it at all. The walls were paper thin and we could hear every word our German neighbors were saying.

The downside to this hostal is that there isn't a kitchen and the common space is not very comfortable. WiFi is free and available only in the common area, not in the room. We got stuck inside for an afternoon because of a torrential downpour and there was nothing to do.

If all you need is a cheap place to lay your head at night then this hostal will work.

Stayed here for 8 nights and was completely happy with the experience. This seems more like a hotel than a hostel-- there are private rooms with bathrooms, but the rooms are very bare-bones. (The bed was a little too firm for me.) Don't book here if you crave luxury. Do book here if you want a good value, friendly service, and a location just a few hundred feet off of Las Ramblas. Close to the subway.

A note about safety- the hotel is located on Sant Pau, which gets a little seedy as you get farther from Las Ramblas. I never felt any danger there, but I would avoid walking past the hotel (away from Las Ramblas) at night.

booked this hostel as price was within our budget (first of many stops through Spain). loved it. Staff very friendly, room clean and we had a really big bathroom. OK no TV in room, but who goes to Barcelona to watch tv, Great location, less than minute walk from middle of 'las ramblas' and metro. Didnt find the area outside the hostal especially 'seedy' tho a 2 minute walk would find you in the 'red light district' but it was well patrolled by police and no one bothered us. would definately stay here on next trip, great location, and a great place to crash out after a long day seeing the lovely sights
