My husband and I stayed here for 3 nights for an anniversary break; we had visited the city previously for a day trip and had chosen to return so that we could explore properly.
The hotel is in a perfect location, the metro line directly outside, ten minutes walk to La Ramblas one way and 15 minutes walk to Playa Espania the other. We chose to use a taxi from the airport to the hotel as we arrived late which cost 28 euros. Returning to the airport we took the aerobus which left from Playa Espania which cost 5,20 euros single per person and took 20 minutes.
The hotel was definitely worthy of 4 stars and clean and modern. The rooms were very nice, we had a standard room which was plenty big enough for us. We had emailed the hotel before travelling to request a higher room, which they accommodated our request and gave us a room on the 7th floor. Our room was at the back and had a view of the top of the buildings in the city. If we had been in a room lower down the view would have been much different- washing lines and residential balconies. The walls were very thin and you can hear the neighbouring rooms but only really at the busiest times of day, such as in the mornings. The only downside to the room was that the only English TV channel was music or the news, didn't bother us too much as we hadn't come to watch TV but would have been nice to have the option for an afternoon rest to watch the box for a while. The cleaners also came when it suited them, one day the room wasn't done until 2:30pm and the next they woke us up by banging and opening our door at 9:30 am.
When we paid for our trip it included breakfast which was adequate enough, but on saying that I would not pay the 15 euros per head if they had charged for it. LOTS of small cafes on Av Parallel to have a reasonably priced breakfast. Also had a hitch when our breakfast was not showing up as being included which resulted in a semi showdown with a very rude waiter. We spoke to management to resolve this yet still had the same problem the following morning. After yet another word with management this was resolved by morning number 3. We didn't have any other meals at the hotel so couldn't comment on the evening food but it smelt lovely and seemed reasonably priced.
Staff were all lovely, couldn't do enough to help you and the manager was excellent at his job and aimed to please.
All in all a wonderful trip with very few hitches and we are planning to visit Barcelona again and we will definitely be staying at the Barcelona Universal Hotel.

My boyfriend and I spent 3 nights here. The reception staff were friendly and helpful with directions and restaurant recommendations. The room and hotel in general was very clean and smart looking.

Rooftop pool - lovely! We spent a couple of hours on the roof each day on the sun loungers and pool. There is a bar up there but ww didn't use it.

Room - clean, really comfortable bed, bathroom well-stocked with the usual mini shampoos, razor, shower cap etc. The air con was much appreciated!

Location - 5 mins walk from Las Ramblas, 10 mins walk from the port and about 15-20 mins from the beach. There's a Metro station just outside the station on the L2 and L3 lines (the L3 takes you to Park Guell for the Gaudi stuff in about 20mins). We bought a 10 trip ticket (T-10) for 9.80euros, which as many ppl can use throughout the day (just pass it back as you go through the gates).

Local restaurants - I recommend Va.De.Tap.As (turn right out the hotel, it's just a few minutes walk), yummy tapas and good prices. Barcelona Central is lovely for a coffee (again turn right out the hotel). Don't go to Ebano - expensive and poor food.

There's a supermarket just up the road - right out the hotel on the other side of the road. Good for 33cent 2litre bottles of water and breakfast stuff!

There's also a great food market just off Las Ramblas.

Overall, fab hotel in good location!

My wife and I had our first European hotel experience here at Hotel Universal. We have been told that European hotels are a lot smaller than back home in Australia. We were pleasantly surprised, a great room and size with all the amenities. Rooms were clean and bed was nice and comfortable.

All staff accommodating, and the location is perfect, close enough to La Rambla approx 10 - 15 min walk. Conveniently located to the Port and catching the Hop on hop off tour bus which is a must to see everything in Barcelona. Also try out two restaurants around the corner (turn right out of hotel and right again) which were well priced/value and so tasty, 1) El Pachuco (Mexican) and Caleuche (Pizza and Pasta)

Ask for a room towards the rear of hotel if you're a light sleeper as the front of the hotel can be a little noisy also the rooms connecting to each room are paper thin, make sure to take some ear plugs

Room Tip: Take ear plugs and request a room at rear of hotel

The hotel has great facilities, everything we needed for our week stay. The location is ideal for exploring the city both on foot or via the metro. The station is directly outside & both the harbour & Las Ramblas are both just a short walk away. The staff were helpful when asked but not overtly friendly compared with other hotels we have visited. Would recommend.

Stayed 3 nights on business, both on the 1st floor and 4th floor. The rooms are extremely noisy--on the 4th floor, I could hear next door neighbors sneeze and walk around. On the 1st floor, it was like sleeping on a busy street. The kitchen is next door, but it feels like it's inside your room. Do NOT stay in rooms 107 or 108 under any circumstances. The 4th floor room had no window (it had a hatch that opened into the inner courtyard, but is closed). I will concede that the bed is comfortable (thankfully).

I dislike blaming staff for anything (it's usually mgmt's fault), but it's hard to defend them here. If you had a Do Not Disturb sign on the door, they would call you to clean your room (I am not kidding...).

The location is on one of the main thoroughfares of Barcelona. That's somewhat a plus, as you can get a cab almost immediately most times, and it's a quick ride anywhere (the metro stop is right there too, although I did not use it). La Rambla is about a 15 minute walk. However, it's not in the most picturesque or pleasant part of said thoroughfare.

The hotel is not cheap. So, the bottom line is, given that Barcelona seemingly has more hotel rooms than people, there are surely better choices (either similar and cheaper, or better and same price).

Room Tip: Do NOT stay in 108.

Overall I think most reviews of this hotel are very fair ,the room was exceptionally clean the location very good although one or two streets between the hotel and las ramblas I would be cautious about but no problems. The metro station right outside is handy although most places walkable I found the hotel very good overall the only negative being the noise, not so much from the main road as we had an internal room, but we were probably unlucky in that there was a lot of noise from fellow guests in the early hours but because the hotel has wooden floors and seemingly thin walls every noise seems to be heard .in our neighbouring room guests only seemed to be talking and walking ,nothing out of the ordinary but every sound seemed amplified so we certainly had poor sleep.this is a shame as everything else about the hotel we were very pleased with ,but we would certainly stay again..

A great hotel indeed. Beautiful roof terrace, but the view on back of the hotel was a bit run down and slummy. Would stay here again. We stayed in a room on the 6th floor and I am not sure if this was an upgrade or not as we had booked one of the corner rooms but it was a fantastic room with a large balcony to sit out on, the room was situated at the front of the hotel.
