Definitely enjoyed by solo stay. Well located, very modern and clean. Enjoyed the (small) roof-top pool after a long, hot day of sightseeing. Lots of inexpensive restaurants nearby for breakfast. Only about 10 minute was from the Colon/waterfront. A bit far from Ramblas though - about E10 each way (although it was walkable it was fairly far particularly if you don't know your way around very well). Also about 15 minute was from Las Arenas shopping mall. I agree it is a bit noisy particularly if your room is facing the street but I always travel with earplugs...just in case. :) Also very much appreciated the free wi-fi laptops on the lobby which enable me to communicate with people back home.

Room Tip: If you want quiet, not the room on the first floor over the front door. The ones in back without a...

We spent the Jubilee week at this hotel. All the staff where friendly, very helpful & all appeared to speak very good English. Our room was at the front on the 5th floor with the lifts opposite. It was a large room with a massive bed, large tv, windows the length of the room & the bathroom had a bath/shower with all the usual accessories. Breakfast was buffet with plenty of choice although that choice didnt change all week.
Their is a metro station outside the hotel which will quickly take you anywhere in the city although La Rambla, Mont Juic & the harbour are all within easy walking distance.
The hotel also has a small rooftop pool, bar, sun terrace, from which you can see across the city, & a gym. Other people have mentioned that this hotel is in the red light district but we never saw any sign of this except for a strip club around the corner. With the Olympics this year their has been talk on the news about pick pockets travelling from Barcelona to London. Barcelona is no worse for this than other major cities if you keep your eyes & ears open. Keep you valuables safe at all times & use your common sense. One thing we did notice was the street sellers with Mr Punch speech toys, if they start making their noises, watch the people selling fans & things disappear!
All in all, Barcelona was a great city to visit with lots to see & things to do whilst the Barcelona Universal Hotel is an excellent hotel which we would go back to time & time again.

Room Tip: Rooms on the front face the main road (Para-lel), ours had windows the length of the room, room numb...

We stayed in a triple room for a long weekend and had a great time. 3 adults and a 4 month old baby.
The positives- we thought this hotel was a total bargain. We paid 598 euros for 3 nights stay and it was a good 4 stars. Lovely (small) rooftop pool with bar and a sun terrace, and a small gym too ( not that we used it!). A little oasis of calm 10 floors up from the bustle of the city. The reception staff spoke fantastic English and were very helpful. The luggage room is lockable and has safety deposit boxes for you to leave your valuables if you get there before check in at 3pm, or if you have a late flight (after the 12pm check out).
Breakfast was 14 euros I think but was really lovely with loads of choice, good quality and set us up for the days sight seeing. Alternatively there are several cafes on the street outside the hotel if you want a cheaper option.
Great location for exploring. Right above a metro station. A single journey ticket is just 2 euros and the tourist hot spots Sagrada Familia and Parc guell don't even require you to change trains at all. So easy! 15 mins walk from las Ramblas and port...Shopping mall Mare magnum on water front has really good food ( we ate at Wok on water front and martinas brasserie on 2nd floor inside). DO NOT EAT OR DRINK IN CAFES ON LAS RAMBLAS!!! It was daylight robbery (and not from pick pockets!) the food was mediocre at best and lunch for 3 cost 103 euros. They add on 10% service charge for rubbish service and are really quite offhand.
The triple room we stayed in was perfect for groups who have a child as it was split in 2 like a suite!! We were in room 612 and it was really big. Lovely cool air con, clean, modern, no kettle though so I took a travel one.

Negatives - room was pretty dark, no kettle but most of all.. noisy hotel! Not ideal for us with a baby, she was very disturbed all night. We requested a room facing the interior column as we had heard that the road noise to the front of the hotel was very loud. It was loud (mainly ambulances and traffic) but the worst noise was other guests in the hotel. There wasn't any sound proofing to speak of so whenever anyone in the vecinity went to toilet, had a shower, put on radio, got home late, it disturbed you.

I'll be staying at the Universal Hotel in Barcelona the next time I'm there; from the comfortable room to the outstandingly central location I really enjoyed my visit.

We needed a room for 3 people, that is to say a room that would fit three comfortably and happened upon the Universal's offering. We were not sure what we would get when we booked a triple room but found 3 separate beds located in a bed-room-esque chamber separated from a small living room area by a sliding door. We were very happy and quite comfortable! Not to mention we found this at a very affordable price.

The hotel is walking distance from the Ramblas and Plaza Catalunya. It's not a super short walk but not terribly long either. Close to the hotel are many eateries (may open very late) and popular bars so you don't have to go far to find a good meal or something to do in the evening. I really like the location including a Metro stop almost directly outside the door.

The hotel staff were friendly and efficient. They care about their guest safety (almost to a fault) and advised us many times about the pickpocket problems in Barcelona. The hotel also offered an AMAZING view of the city - especially from the balcony on the 9th (i think it was) floor. From there you could see all the way down to the ocean, to the top of the Olympic park, see the BCN tower both day and night and down the busy street on which the hotel sits. It was really quite stunning!

In short, a great hotel in a great city that I would recommend to any of my friends!

Room Tip: The balcony on the 9th floor is great so staying on 9 is a plus

We had a good, clean room with spacious bathroom, big TV, great aircon (and great sleep quality), 5 steps from metro station. Very friendly stuff. Pool was tiny, but this wasn't an important issue for us. It's at the rooftop, with great city scenery.
Passeig de Gracia and beach accessible only by subway, Rambla in approx 15 min by feet. In a Carrer Nou de la Rambla (10 min approx by feet) - a very big vine, whiskey, gin etc. shop - Torres
