“Ok, but nothing special”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 8, 2012

We stayed 5 nights in January, the room was quite small and dark, with no sunlight coming in. Extreamly unconfortable pillows and the boy workig as a doorman was very rude. However the receptionist and the rest of the staff was very friendly and the breakfast buffet is really good. There is a metrostation directly in front of the hotel and it´s only 10-15min walk from La Rambla, but you do have to walk trough some dodgy areas to get there. I think Universal is a classic 4 star hotel, no reason to go back but not too bad either.

Thank you for your review. I want to thank you especially for your honesty by recognizing that, although you do not think our hotel is something special, you think that our staff (except the doorman) was very friendly and our breakfast buffet was very good. Regarding the doorman I must recognize that in January (low season for us) our own doormen have been on holiday (all of them) and we have had working replacement staff (people who only work during the holidays of our own staff). Maybe this situation is related to your experience with the doorman. I apologize for it and will take it in consideration for the next holidays of our doormen. Thank you for highlighting the metro station is just in front of our hotel.

We chose the coldest weekend in Europe to visit, but not much could be done about that! Some people have complained about noise. Just ask for a high room at the rear of the hotel and it is lovely and quiet. The staff are extremely helpful in pointing out places to eat and other local information. The bar is also very reasonably priced for a city centre hotel. Can't comment on the food as we were room only. If you like tapas we highly recommend Quimet & Quimet a couple of blocks away and Rosalie34 which to 5 minutes away. This was more expensive but lovely dishes. Cal Pep in the Bari Gothic is amazing but with only 20 seats at the bar you need to queue. The fact that the queue is full of local regulars tell a story. Great hotel, pretty cheap, friendly helpful staff and a spotlessly clean room in walking distance of most things, with a metro station outside the door. What more could you want. We will be going back again, what more can I say!

Room Tip: High floor at the rear. We were 818, nice and quiet!

Thank you for your review and your tapas restaurants recommendations!!! I think you give good advices for travellers. Thank you for your comments, especially when you say your room was very clean, our hotel is well located and metro station just outside the door. It is true, the weekend you came was extremely cold in Barcelona, at least for us who live in southern Europe!

When we got to Barcelona, it was raining and gloomy so it felt a bit sketchy when we pulled up to the Hotel. The hotel is a standard hotel and check in was effortless. It was a bit scary seeing that the sign that warns us that Barcelona was notorious for pick-pocketers. We knew it but it was a bit of an awakening seeing the sign there.

The hallways are fairly dark and it takes a bit of time for the automatic sensors to turn on the lights. When we in our room (317), it was like walking into a blast chiller because the air had been turned off. We managed to get the heat up after a while to warm up. Our view faced the back of the hotel to peoples' home that had laundry hanging out. it wasn't exactly scenic.

The room is a good size room with plenty of closet space, and I had no complaint for the size of the bathroom either. There were toiletries provided, but they were very strong so it was not something that I could use. The plus is that they had a towel warmer which was great for doing a little bit of laundry and having it dry quickly.

All in all we were satisfied with the room and the hotel, but we weren't necessarily blown away by anything there. Also we didn't try the bar or the restaurant on site because it was fairly pricey and there are many many restaurants around. I think that I may stay here again if the deal is great, but other then that I would choose to stay in the Barri Gotic area where there's more shops, restaurants, and entertainment.

Tips:
-Download the metro app if you have internet access on your phone.
-Go to Quimet & Quiment --- So amazing! It is a tiny little place with no sitting so be forewarned. However, you will soon forget you are standing after having the tapas there.
-Nice walk to Las Ramblas. The Mercat La Bouqueria was one of my favorite places in Barcelona.

Enjoy your trip here! Barcelona is an amazing city.

Thank you for your review! It is true, we have a sign at the front desk that warns our guests about pickpockets in the city. We are not happy to show this sign at the reception, but we do it to help you to be aware of them while you visit our city. Barcelona is not dangerous, but you have to mind the pickpockets exist and just with a small advice on arrival at the hotel you can change your bahavior while you walk around the city and avoid a bad situation that may spoil your holidays. Other hotels do not gice advices like this one to their clients, but we prefer to give advices as part of our service. Sorry if you did not like to find this sign on arrival, but I am happy you stayed with us during some days and nothing happened to you during your stay (maybe because our sign at the reception warned you?). Normally our guests thank us for this advice when they are checking out and they use to say that it is a good advice because the leave the city having no problems during their stay.

I had a three night stay in this hotel in January. I was there with my two sisters and the room was very spacious and the three beds all very comfortable, even the double fold out which from experience in other hotels, they can sometimes not be the most comfortable! It is on a very busy road and for a light sleeper like me, I did find it a bit noisy... nothing a pair of ear plugs didn't sort and it didn't bother my two sisters. If I was to be picky about the room, it could do with a couple of more mirrors...there was only one in the main room and I say this only because there were 3 women trying to get ready at the same time! It's a short walk to Las Ramblas, the staff are very friendly and and informative at the front desk. We were very impressed by the bottle of Cava that was sent up to our room shortly after check-in when they realised we were there for my birthday! A very nice touch in customer service and it was very greatly appreciated!! I have recommended this hotel to friends on my return and I would definitely stay there again.

Thank you for your review! It makes us happy to read that you were happy with the room and with the front desk staff. It is very important for us when a guests thinks our staff has been friendly. Regarding the noise in the room I think it is a subjective issue. You have to think we are located in city center and this location is noisy itself, but when I say it is something subjective is because you needed ear plugs but your two sisters didn't. The 3 of you were in the same room and only 1 person minded the noise. It prooves it is a subjective issue. Anyway your room was facing directly to Paralel Avenue, we have other rooms facing other places with less noise.

Thank you for your review and for recognizing our hotel is not a bad hotel. Anyway I understand your opinion about remodeling rooms because you stayed in the only floor that has not been refurbished. During 2011 we have been renewing the hotel and there are now only a few rooms pending for renovation (around 5% of all our rooms). They will be renewed very soon.

The hotel is situated in a great spot in Barcelona, exactly above a subway station!!! The price was fair for Barcelona standards, the service was fine and the breakfast had a great variety! However, even though we had asked for a double room (with a double bed), we were given a double room with twin beds (put together). The location may not have been the safiest in town but we didn't feel threatened at any time.
We loved the fact that on the reception desk there was a huge warning about pick-pockets! We would recommend it but for our next visit we might choose a less "formal" hotel!

We were extremely happy with this hotel - the only downside being the in-room lighting, the bulbs are so very dark you can barely see. Very good internet, very clean. A bit disconcerting at first to look out our rear-hotel windows and see apartment balconies strewn with drying laundry, but heck, that's what Europe's about, isn't it? The balconies are terrifically close, but it's quieter in the back than the front. I wouldn't go for the breakfast, at 15 EU it's hardly worth it for the basics, though I guess if quantity is your preference it would be fine. WARNING - no coffee makers in the rooms. You can purchase a little plug-in hot pot for about 12-15 EU, which is what we did. ALSO, the rack rate is very high, but they will work with you in a serious way. We paid about 100EU per night for rooms with two beds. Nice staff.
