“Probably best for the business traveler”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 6, 2012

If you don't spend much time in the room/hotel, the Melia Barcelona is just fine. I don't think it is quite a 5 star. But there wasn't anything to complain about either.

The location and atmosphere doesn't really cater to the tourist looking to experience the charm of Barcelona. Nor does it have spectacular views. The only nearby attraction is the mall.

There were also several conventions going on and lots of business travelers (busy!). So I think it is quite sufficient for that type of travel 'experience'.

The rooms are a really weird shape and dark, but the huge tub and multi-head shower are pretty cool! No coffee in the room (deduct points) and the drinks from the hotel bar were expensive. The hairdryer overheated and they had a new one up to the room in seconds. This actually happens to me a lot and they were the fastest so far! (add points)

We only stayed one night so I didn't get a lot of exposure to any of the other amenities so again, everything was just fine.

We enjoyed a 3 nights pentecost weekend here.
A lot of shops are not open on these holidays.

Our room on the fifth floor was okay.
A summary:
- Poor courtyard view.
- Tight spaced room. (but i'm 202cm tall and 120kg so..)
- Jacuzzi on the room!
- On demand moviechannel. (though 14 € for a movie)
- Daily refilled minibar with plenty of drinks but only one candybar .. ahwwww. (no supermarket closeby)
- Excellent staff. (reception, housekeeping, roomservice) (helpfull, english speaking, friendly)
- Quick roomservice. (but poor pizza, tasty wine)
- Free wifi internet with good signal. (5th floor)
- Taxi stop nearby so no long waiting. (Though on departure day we decided to go packed to plaza espanya to have breakfast. And the driver thought from our bags to have an airport ride so he bumped up our 5 euro ride to 8 when we told him to go to plaza espanya.
- Mall (l'illa) and restaurants nearby. (sushi train)
- ATM closeby. (but out of order during our stay)
- Noisy room! (We heard the neighbours talk, giggle, blowdry their hair.. so what they heard from us.. hehe)

Room Tip: I believe it doesn't matter. The elevators are quick and plenty.

Good morning! My family and I planned a trip to Barcelona, Spain, and decided to stay at Melia Barcelona, a hotel that had been recently upgraded and made attractive and modern. At check in we were introduced to the concierge named Diego, who was fluent in English and Spanish, and made our welcome more than interesting! The rooms we stayed in on the 20th floor, were incredibly polished. The beds were remarkably comfortable and the room's amenities were excellent! The stay was great! We had breakfast on their first level, and it provided everything you could ever ask for. I can say that this hotel mostly catered to the working class, but as foreign hotel residents, we were never treated differently or looked at another fashion. The crew treated us with respect and always with a warm, inviting smile. At our leave, we were never rushed to check out. As we waited for our bus to arrive, no one ever forced us to move or wait elsewhere. This hotel is highly recommended by my family and I!

We were suppose to stay 3 nights, but the "Insight Tour" we had book had changed hotels, so we had only one night at this hotel, and we were upgraded to a suite, Wow, it was great, the bed was huge, the shower was something out of this world with 6 different jets coming out of the wall, a huge lounge area, two toilets, a spa bath and terrific bathrooms. Our only complaint was breakfast was moved to a conference room on the lower level due to the amount of guests who had arrived for the Grand Prix...
The hotel was quite a way from the main city centre, but a taxi ride is soooo cheap it only cost 4 euros. Around the corner is a huge shopping mall (all nice shops).

Room Tip: Try and get an upgrade...

We recently stayed for 4 nights at the Melia for the first portion of our honeymoon.

The hotel is situated about a half hour from the Barcelona airport, maybe a bit more in traffic. It is NOT in the 'heart' of the city or near the usual tourist attractions, and will need a solid 10 minute walk to reach the closest subway station (Hospital Clinic). As such, it is a nice retreat from the hustle and bustle of the tourist areas, but can be a bit out of the way if you're the type who likes being able to quickly stop in to your hotel during your day on holiday.

First impressions of this hotel are quite good. The reception area is distinctively modern, clean and chic. Check in is a painless process and moves quickly and efficiently, with the free internet access being provided without even asking. There is a bit of an upsell on the premium rooms (The Level), but easy enough to say no to.

Our room was a standard one. A nice king size bed, and a full shower/bath washroom. The bed was comfortable and the linens were of good quality. The room itself, much like the reception area, is modern and clean.

The bathroom area on first glance is awesome. Huge, spacious, top notch finishes. The shower is a combination rainfall shower head with body jets. However, the first impressions are just that. Our shower continually flooded during our stay, despite having hotel maintenance up 3 times to fix. The first two times, the 'fix' didn't even 'fix' the first time we used the shower again!

The rest of the room fails past the first impression test as well.

Despite the comfortable bed, the layout leaves much to be desired. The entry foyer to the room is curiously narrow, and there is sparse storage for 2 - the closet area is quite small, and the built in drawers are laughably shallow. Additionally, no iron or ironing board is in room, although to be fair, we did not request, so do not know if it could have been sent up. Lastly, despite the modern furnishings and style, everything seems a bit 'tattered' around the edges for lack of a better term. Marks on the wall, marks on the table legs, etc. Small details that add up to the overall impression of the room and the hotel.

We did not partake in the breakfast buffet, feeling that 20+ Euros was a bit steep. However, we did dine at the hotel restaurant one evening and were very happy with our meal - octopus salad, Caprese salad, paella, and beet risotto. The service was personal and quick, and we were very satisfied with the quality of the food.

Overall, this hotel has a lot of potential. With the location being out of the way, the details have to to be right - and the Melia doesn't get those details right, so it fails to reach the heights that it probably can attain.

We had a booking confirmed a month before international travel. Two days before check in date, an email was sent saying an error in their booking system, for the first time ever had caused a double booking, and we were to be checked into another hotel. The new hotel has terrible reviews so we said no (they wanted the same premium room rate). A dangerous proposition to rely on this chain for international travellers. It was very lucky that we had checked email en route. No doubt will get some assurance that this is the only time it has ever happened. Sure! The number of times I've had a business say "sorry, this is the first time this has ever happened, please believe me" exactly equals the number of very poor businesses I have dealt with. Good Luck
