You would never think the place could deliver such quality. Just trust Xavi (the cook and owner) on what is good for the day and which wine should go with it and he will do the magic. The food is great and the choice of champagne really good too. If you are only for fancy places this is not your restaurant, is a really basic set up, small and shabby, but if you like eating and wine, you will be very positively surprised.

Stumbled upon this place on our return from the beach in Barceloneta. While the service started off awkward and slow (they seated us in the far corner, claiming that a perfectly good table was reserved for a party that never came), it got steadily better as the night wore on and the food got better too! The fried artichoke hearts were a good start, followed by a hearty, flavourful seafood paella. The crowning touch was the dessert; a chocolate cake infused with peppercorns and Catalonian spices that was a perfect end to the evening. By the end, even the service was friendly and courteous! Oh, did I mention the value? This was one of the best meals for the money we had in Barcelona. My advice: reserve in advance and you will probably be treated to one of the best nights in Barcelona.

I ate here by myself on a cold, wet, windy night in Barceloneta and greatly enjoyed the warmth of the husband and wife owners with a delicious meal that went on and on... The restaurant is small with only 4 or 5 tables and sparse surroundings. But I was here for the food and personal atmosphere, not for the decor.

The menu had a number of good choices so I asked the chef to bring me a series of small plates based on whatever he felt like cooking. His choices were perfect and they were cooked to perfection. His creativity was fantastic -- imagine a plate with grilled octopus with fresh strawberries on the side, all drizzled with a slightly sweet balsamic concoction. Wow! The seared grilled tuna was also excellent as were the other dishes. After taking a break to chat with the chef I decided I could eat a little more so I ordered the fried baby artichokes. I asked the chef what kind of wine I should drink with this and he shook his finger and said "no wine, have beer with this." The artichokes came out sliced thin, fried crispy with big flakes of sea salt, perfect for a beer. He recommended a special Catalan microbrew - this one was called Sitges made by Guineu. This was a truly excellent beer and pairing with the artichokes, so good that I ordered a second beer... to drink with slices of a quality aged manchego.

Then it was on to dessert, a coffee creme brulee with cava. Then I was treated to a very special Catalan sweet wine that captures the flavor of fresh grapes. It was a perfect lovely evening, and it would have been made better only if I could have shared it with my wife and friends!

Relax and enjoy the great company of the chef and his wife; it's best if you speak Spanish or French but you can get by with English and enjoy a delicious meal.

1st impression of restaurant raised suspicions - bit shabby, small, dark and old......huh huh. Business guest were really speechless and hesitating.....But after food started to come to table, everything changed. Food was excellent and really reasonably priced. Very good value for the money for those, who are not after posh places.....

What can one add to OUTSTANDING ?

Outstanding ambience, food, service, wines, price !

For me Barcelona is a very special place, perhaps it is the architecture and or the ghost of Gaudi, which seems to create this magical impression. Restaurants exude a welcoming aura of friendliness. One feels more like family than a paying guest, and the food-wine in general appears to taste better than in other cities, Perhaps they should re-name El-Xiringo to EL-Xanadu ?
