The hotel is well situated in the Eixample area of the city. The lobby and the bar to the left of it are fairly chic. We were there as a group; some of the rooms were very nicely appointed; others, done in a different style, less so. We soon realised that there were two types of room: those with a small window which looked on to a brick wall about 60cm away, and those on the street side which had the noise of the traffic going by. In its quest to be trendy the hotel also has, as we later discovered, a nightclub in the basement which pumps out booming disco music till very late. This was audible from rooms on the second floor so anyone not intending to dance themselves to sleep in their bed might wish to ask for a room on a higher floor. The staff were very friendly and helpful; the ones we dealt with spoke fluent French and English in addition to the obligatory Castilian and Catalan.

First the good bit....

The hotel itself is stylishly presented and in a perfect location right in the heart of the shopping district - literally a stones throw away from the beautiful Passeig de Gracia, a short walk to Las Ramblas, La Segrada Familia and the several Gaudi buildings in the surrounding area.

The bad bits.....

On arrival at the hotel beware of the lift situation. Previous reviews (which I was grateful for) had warned about the lift if you are staying on the 6th, 7th or 8th floors, and they were right! As we were staying on the 7th we had to take this particular lift and as a result had the most claustraphobic, frightening trip I have ever encountered to reach our floor. The lift was so small you could only fit one person plus luggage into it and it took an age to reach its destination.

TIP: If you are staying on the 6th, 7th or 8th floors, take one of the nice big glass lifts (why do they only go to level 5?!?) to the 5th floor and then walk the two or three flights to the upper floors. Trust me its safer!

Our experience of the Hotel Alexandra was also unfortunately overshadowed by noise. We complained after our first night that we had been disturbed by noise from two other rooms on our level (kids running up and down the corridor screaming and slamming doors at 1am, 2am etc) The staff apologised and said it wouldn't happen again. Unfortunately it did, the next night from the same rooms. At 3am when we had all had about as much as we could take I contacted reception who apologised but did nothing to resolve the situation and just said "Well they are leaving soon anyway". We were also checking out early (6am) and did so after having a second night of very little sleep. We informed the staff on checkout again of the noise issue and they just shrugged in their usual unfriendly way. They really didn't care.

Next came the battle with the car park. If you are considering driving to Barcelona and leaving your car at the Hotel Alexandra - DON'T. Not because its not safe, but because its highly unlikely you will be able to get it back out again without needing a new clutch! The car park is extremely small (almost impossible to manoeuvre an estate car in) and has the most ridiculously narrow steep spiral exit / entrance ramp from both upper and lower levels which is also slippery so difficult for tyres to grip. You are only given approximately 2 minutes to exit this 'assault course' before the electronic security shutter at the top closes again and you are left suspended at an narrow angle on an extremely steep hill that even the most sturdy handbrakes would struggle with. (Someone then has to get out of the car without scraping their door off the wall and climb to the top of the ramp to re-open the shutter).

Put it this way, If you think the lift sounds frightening, don't try the car park!

It's such a shame that this hotel was a disappointment. It had the potential to be so good. It is extremely unusual for me to complain about a hotel or write a bad review but our experience there was so unforgettable that I feel it is only fair to warn other people.

If you are looking for a hotel that's right in the heart of Barcelona, reasonably priced and you're not too bothered about noisy neighbours or unfriendly staff then maybe take a chance and stay here (just don't bring the car).

Equally, if it's decent quality service and a good night's sleep that you're after, perhaps it is best stay elsewhere.

Whatever you decide to do, make sure you visit Barcelona. It's amazing!

We stayed at the Alexandra when we first arrived in Barcelona and were so happy with it that we stayed again at the end of our trip.

The hotel is in a great location in the Passeig de Gracia area. Great restaurants in the area and a very convenient location close enough to either walk or take a quick cab ride to all the main attractions in BCN.

The hotel was modern, clean, quiet...couldn't have asked for better!

This was our second visit to Barcelona and I love to stay in the Eixample. Alexandra have the best location between Rambla de Catalunya and Passeio de Gracia. Easily take the airport bus to Placa de Catalunya and walk 10 minutes and you will have the hotel directly on front – next to several restaurants, Gaudi’s houses, museums, Burberry and upper brand shops, but also Benneton, Zara and Massimo Dutti.

The Alexandra itself is an ok hotel, not elegant or totally modern – it’s just a good business/leisure hotel with good standard. Rooms are small and contemporary, nothing special. No bathrobes or slippers – I also missed a shower gel. Cleaning was very good and the hotel is fresh. Breakfast was excellent and very nice with a lot of fruit, cakes, bread, cheeses, hot dishes, mozzarella, ham and jucies. Every morning we needed to ask for extra new coffee, it was cold and old. However – the nice breakfast staff was giving us a hot good coffee accordingly. Front Desk staff was terribly, no service and absolutely no knowledge about the city. You need to be your own concierge!

Don’t miss the café and bakery next door at Rambla de Catalunya, and you need to take a cocktail or dinner at Omm.

I would stay here again if I got a great deal but my favourite in Barcelona is still Granados 86 Hotel!

last week i was robbed INSIDE this hotel. the employees of the hotel were less than helpful - they did not call the police (which the police later told me they were supposed to do), they did not offer a phone to call and cancel credit cards, they basically told me to leave the hotel and go to the police station. the police said this was highly unusual and even suggested that someone from the hotel may have been involved. later, when i asked for the name of the head of the hotel so i could lodge a complaint, they refused to give me his name. they refused to compensate me in any way for a theft that happened ON THE PREMESIS, they refused to provide any assistance, they refused to comp me on any part of the stay.

This hotel was so noisy! It's quite near to everything so that was good but we got no sleep at all! We could hear the kitchen and also everything in both rooms next to us and the room above us. It didn't help that the cleaning staff were so noisy at 6am next door!

I wouldnt stay again, purely because of how noisy it was all night!

Stayed at this hotel for a short holiday for 4 days. Was excellent location for metro and trains to airport. Also walking distance to two Gaudi houses. Did not have any food at hotel, but lots of restaurants, tapas bars just metres away. Room was very comfortable and modern. There were no tea/coffee making facilities, but that is standard for most Spanish hotels. Service was overall good, but only problem which occured was on last day. We had been told when checked in that could have late checkout by an hour and half. We were told this was confirmed and had been put into hotel computer system, and so we planned our schedule accordingly. However on day of checkout, different person at desk said she had never been informed of this, and therefore we had to vacate rooms within half hour. This was said in quite rude manner, and no apology was made, or any attempt to verify with another staff member if any other arrangements had been made. In the end this did not have huge impact on our plans, but slightly marred our otherwise enjoyable experience at this hotel.
