It's a fact that downtown hotels are rather expensive in Barcelona.
The Barcelo Sants offers a good alternative.
First, if you are flying to Barcelona, you can take the train (outside of Terminal 2) and go 4 or 5 stations to the SANTS station. The hotel is built above the Sants train station.. If you buy the "Barcelona Card", the train is free.
Then, if you want to go around Barcelona, there is a Metro station inside the train station.
Also, if you want to use the "Hop On, Hop Off" bus tours, both companies have a stop right across the street from the hotel. The SANTS station also have car rental outlets. But beware, it would cost you €25 per night to park at the hotel. There are also several city bus lines that stop there and thousands of cabs just outside the train station.

Note that you cannot access the hotel from inside the Train Sation. You have to go outside and find a small door that goes to an elevator to the hotel lobby.

Second, the hotel itself. As soon as you step in the hotel, you got the impression that you are in a science fiction movie. Everything has a black and white futiristic style. Some people likes it, others don't. But it is rather unique. That decor is also present in the bedrooms. Beds are confortable and the rooms have a decent size. Good service at the front desk.
Breakfast are rather good but we fond the dinner overpriced and food was not that good. We strongly suggest that you take the metro and go downtown for much better food and drinks for much less.

We really enjoyed our stay. Hotel gave us a good quality for a decent price and, due to the location, was extremly easy to go anywhere in Barcelona.

A very comfortable hotel with good food.
Convenient location for traveling to the airport and the city.
If you are attending a conference there, and need access to the internet, then make sure you allocate time to visit MacDonalds in Sants station as the internet in the hotel when a small number of people use the service, it stops working. Nobody at the hotel seems to know what the issue is and get the standard someeone is fixing the problem.
Nice place is on a leisurely break, but for business it is no good especially a conference lasting for days where you need to stay on line, and you are no a Spanish national with mobile broadband.

Stayed here for a professional development workshop whilst my wife went shopping and sight seeing.
Positives: The hotel has a futuristic theme, efficient check in, iMacs in the lobby for guest use, plenty of choice at the buffet breakfast. Clean, and conveniently sits right on top of a transport hub, taxi, train, metro ( no problems with noise though). 30 minutes train journey from the airport, 15 minutes metro ride to La Rambles and the Old City.
Negatives: If I was in Barcelona just for sight seeing then I would have preferred a more central location, but it isn`t so bad.

This is my fourth visit to Barcelona. Normally we stay at Barcino 147, a Bed & Breakfast within easy walking distance to Casa Mila, Gothic Quarter, Las Ramblas, Paseo De Gracias, Sagrada Familia, etc.) However, my wife was giving a talk at the Hotel Barcelo Sants conference center, so we gratefully accepted the "conference sponsored free" lodging above the conference center.

The breakfasts were amazing: fresh juices, coffee, teas, homemade pastries, various meats and cheeses, yogurts, all kinds of eggs, etc. I've worked in 26 countries and the breakfast we were provided had as much variety and quantity as anywhere I've been.

The rooms were European size, small and functional. We found the beds comfortable and the showers had plenty of hot water. For us, size doesn't matter. All of our waking time was spent in Barcelona, not in the room!

The one advantage of Hotel Barcelo Sants' location is that it is easy walking distance to the Miro Museum, the Olympic Park, Pueblo Espanol, etc. Plus, since it is the main train station in Barcelona, it is "non-stop" to outlying areas, such as if you want to take a day trip to Montserrat, to see the Black Virgin Mary. And since you'll want to visit Casa Mila, the Gothic Quarter, Las Ramblas, Paseo De Gracias, Sagrada Familia, etc., you can take the Metro (it's quite safe though watch for pickpockets) to these places or enjoy a longer walk.

Though we normally stay at Bed & Breakfasts, the Hotel Barcelo Sants did a good job. We would gladly return to Hotel Barcelo Sants.

Room Tip: Barcelo Sants is located above Barcelona's main train station. It is easy access to/from the air...

The hotel is positioned just above the central train and bus station, which is convenient, but isn't the nicest view... also, the hotel is about 10 minutes ride in the metro away from the center of the city (Rambla), and makes it hard to enjoy the night life at Barcelona (no metro back to the hotel late at night). On the other hand the hotel is five minutes walk from the beautiful Esphania Square and the magnificent magic fountains.
Our arrival at the hotel wasn't very pleasant even though the hotel is special and beautiful- we had a hard time finding the hotel located above the station- you have to go to the back and find the elevator, and after we got in the lady in the reception desk wasn't very nice, as most of the staff, accept for few who were great.
Anyway, the room was absolutely charming- modern, beautiful, big and comfortable with a huge bed! You have anything you need in the room- a safe, loaded minibar, slippers, kettle and tea, hairdryer, bathing products, WiFi and even a amplifier for a Ipod... :)
There was a thing we didn't expect- the bathroom was inside the room- only separated by a low counter and a mirror. Although it's cute, it's also very intimate- no privacy from your roommate at all! Recommended only for very close couples. no door for the toilet- only a sliding door which resembles a closet- you can hear everything going inside there! i didn't like using the room's toilet for that reason. Same story with the shower- no way to get undressed out of roommate's site.
breakfast is great! beautiful dining room with an variety of delicious food- eggs, meet, pastries, fruits, juice and some vegetables.
overall, very recommended hotel!

Room Tip: Room's with view to the other side then the bus station. Rooms with a closed bathroom.

The breakfast is a bit poor not much veriaty.
The hotel located far from the citiy center, you will need to take the metro to get to the main attractions but the metro is located below the hotel so its eazy.

Stayed here for three nights in October to attend a conference which was also held in the hotel. Whilst not in the city centre, it is a great location, very easy to get there on the train from the airport, and also easy to get into the main town via the tube or train. The station is directly under the hotel. The local area is also nice with a good selection of bars and restaurants.
The hotel was relatively expensive in my view, the rooms are average size, although they have large picture windows which help with a feeling of air, and blackout blinds too. The communal areas are all clean, well maintained and fresh looking. There is a small bar, but it is not really geared up very well; there was a long wait to get served on both occasions that I tried.
The food was excellent, although the breakfast selection not that wide. Finally, the decor within the hotel is modelled on a sort of spaceship theme - fine if you're into that sort of thing; I found it all a bit unnecessary and pretentious; the overall effect was really just to make the communal areas feel stark and functional, and the hallways very dark.
