Owner description: The European Museum of Modern Art , MEAM, exhibits the finest Contemporary Figurative Art. It is owned by TheFoundation of Arts and Artists, and the purpose is to promote and diffuse Figurative Art of the 20th and 21st Centuries. The Foundation’s claim is to find a new contemporary language without denying tradition by progressing into the new Century. Moreover, the Foundation of Arts and Artists, organizes each year the Figurativas Painting and Sculpture Awards, and with the wesbiteFigurativas en Red opens a window with the artworks of the Contemporary Figurative artists. The MEAM is currentlly located at the Gomis Palace, in the middle of the streets of the Born in Barcelona, a neighborhood where culture is always present and reflects the charm of the old part of the city, an area that knew how to mix tradition and modernity, becoming a requiered visit for the tourits interested in the Monumental Barcelona. The MEAM is different from other Contemporary Art museums because it houses living artists who created Figurative Art. These artworks are hardly seen in other museums, collections or entities, to whom the word Contemporary is identified by experiment and abstraction.

It takes a lot of guts to do art outside the currently fashionable styles, as the quotes in this museum remind us ("The current generation is slipping away because nobody has the vision...").

This museum/gallery goes entirely against the Barcelona modernism of Miro and Picasso by presenting art that looks like it was created in the current century but thought up a few before. Imagine what a classic nude would look like in modern technique, or what more current body shapes would look like in sculpture. The works (mostly sculpture and painting or photography representing people) are beautiful and luminous... but different. There is a ouch of the grotesque that is very in vogue nowadays, in, say, a severed head or an old sagging body, but others are straight up beautiful.

If this sounds like it could appeal to you, then definitely give this shot a museum.

Also, don't forget to explore the area around the museum. The narrow streets are some of the most charming and least touristy in Barcelona, with fascinating shops and boutiques.

We stumbled upon the gallery, which doesn't look fantastic from the street. Ho Hum. Well it was like opening up pandorahs box and out came magic. One floor after another...Incredible works - portraits that I felt if I touched would move. Sculptors rich in flavour. This isn't modern art that slip slop slap on a canvas - its the 18th century reflected in the 2Ist . If you love art - great art - you will love this.

We enjoyed our visit to the MEAM. It's a beautiful 18th-century building, and I found a lot of the works striking and engaging. The museum focuses on figurative art rather than abstract or conceptual work, and I think this probably makes it more accessible for most people (compared to the MACBA, for example).

Also, it's is a reasonable size. When I visit a large museum, I often find that I reach a saturation point, where I can't really take in or appreciate anything else. In this case it felt like just the right-sized "serving" of art.

When we visited the MEAM, we bought tickets that included admission to a blues concert held inside the museum. It was a pleasure to see music and art come together in such an impressive setting. In the summer of 2013 (including September), they were offering a series of blues, swing and classical concerts.

The museum has only been around for a couple of year, and apparently it's not yet in many of the guidebooks, but it's well worth a visit.
