“Good but still hungry”

There are 4 tapas bars with 4 drinks - excellent! The first bar was excellent, a small shop with additional tapas facilities - plenty of food and wine. The next was pretty average and pitiful amount of cider to drink. The last 2 were great; a standing only Cava bar and a traditional spit-and-sawdust bar.

Overall the experience was excellent but we still were left hungry which was not a major problem as we just had to go into another place for more tapas. I think there could have been more interaction and information about the area while walking between bars.

We loved the price of the tour--and our rating is based on the value we feel we received for the cost. We ended up on this tour with 2 other couples. They were both from Germany, while we were from the United States. This, of course, added to the delight of the evening as Dirk led us to 4 places we would never have found on our own. His goal was for us to have an "authentic" Catalonian experience, which I believe he achieved. In all, it was a great way for us to spend our first full day in Barcelona. Dirk was very prompt and responsible, and I appreciate the opportunity to have this introduction to Spanish tapas.

We were surprised to discover that our guide/owner Dirk was German rather than Spanish, but what mattered most is that he is a lover of all foods Catalan and was able to introduce us to a very varied and delicious menu. Our first visit was to a small 'store' specializing in Catalan products where we were given a table in the back, a wonderful glass of red wine, a plate of cheese, fresh tomatoes, and bread and a local salami, and a little chocolate on the side. Next we went to Bilbao Berria (bilbaoberria.com) where we could sample from an enormous variety of hot and cold tapas as well as sweets. It was crowded with locals, laughter, and great food. Next we went to a place whose name I can't remember but whose hanging ham hocks, sausages, and a door person to insure we wouldn't spill out into the street with a glass in hand, I will never forget. The only thing served besides the sausages is cava - what a great salty/sweet combination. Our last stop was Bar La Plata where it was only ourselves and two ancient mariners early in the evening when we arrived. The specialty, indeed the only food on the menu, is deep fried sardines and a salad of onions, tomatoes, and olives. The last stop wasn't our favorite in terms of food but we felt we were moving back in time sitting there - and were glad to have this experience. Our stops were located in disparate parts of the city so walking from one to the other took us to various neighborhoods. Dirk is stronger of food than history but knew enough that we got a good feel for the history and culture of the places where we strolled. I know that one reviewer complained that Dirk only took him to touristy spots - this is totally different from our own experience - we highly recommend these tours.

We adored Katrina, our Tour Guide, who provided a great walking tour and four very different looks at tapas and pintxos!
We started with a store that sold the things we ate (awesome), then onto pintxos at a commercial place with at least 20+ offerings, then onto a famed meat and cava store and stopped off to finishe at a small place that featured fresh fish.
Katrina really was wonderful, answered all of our questions and made us feel like we were getting an inside look. As total tapas beginners, she explained everything thoroughly and completely, and it was GREAT!
We loved the first three stops, but would have skipped the fourth- it was the least impressive of the bunch.
