Owner description: This fascinating area is steeped in history, with city hall located in the same spot where kings once reigned. You'll find narrow streets and squares here, with Gothic mansions, museums, historic churches, bars and restaurants. The Placa del Rei is reputedly the place where King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella welcomed Columbus after his voyage to America.

I guess you can't avoid going to the Ramblas but you'll be disappointed with the street. Most of the vendors are third world refugees that haven't really grasped the concept of "have a nice day"! The dude streets are charming, clean and very we'll maintained and restored. Really charming.

Very interesting place to visit. A lot of narrow streets full of small shops and tavernas offering tapas and sangria

This part of Barcelona makes the city hardest to leave. Charm and beauty are around every corner. Be sure to take your time going in and out of as many places as you can. This is what Barcelona's soul is made of.

Everything about this area is wonderful. There are wonderful old sites, shopping places, and fabulous restaurants. No visit to Barcelona is complete without a visit to the Ciutat Vella.

The old city of Gothic district of Barcelona should be the first place to visit as you start your exploration of this city.
Start at the Holy Basilica and Cathedral, where work on this building began in 1298. make sure to take a trip in the rickety elevator to the roof for views across the city. Don't forget to visit the geese which stroll around the courtyard, before you leave.
When you leave, turnleft and then left again, and plunge into the narrow side streets that mark this area.
Another interesting sight is the Corinthian columns that are all that remain of the Roman Temple of Augustus.
When you are ready to leave this area, make a day of it by walking down to the nearby marina, along to the statue of Columbus and enjoy Las Ramblas.
