Owner description: This fascinating area is steeped in history, with city hall located in the same spot where kings once reigned. You'll find narrow streets and squares here, with Gothic mansions, museums, historic churches, bars and restaurants. The Placa del Rei is reputedly the place where King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella welcomed Columbus after his voyage to America.

Very interesting place to visit. A lot of narrow streets full of small shops and tavernas offering tapas and sangria

“Hard to leave”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 17, 2013

This part of Barcelona makes the city hardest to leave. Charm and beauty are around every corner. Be sure to take your time going in and out of as many places as you can. This is what Barcelona's soul is made of.

“Wonderful place to spend time”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 14, 2013

Everything about this area is wonderful. There are wonderful old sites, shopping places, and fabulous restaurants. No visit to Barcelona is complete without a visit to the Ciutat Vella.

“Gothic”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 14, 2013

The old city of Gothic district of Barcelona should be the first place to visit as you start your exploration of this city.
Start at the Holy Basilica and Cathedral, where work on this building began in 1298. make sure to take a trip in the rickety elevator to the roof for views across the city. Don't forget to visit the geese which stroll around the courtyard, before you leave.
When you leave, turnleft and then left again, and plunge into the narrow side streets that mark this area.
Another interesting sight is the Corinthian columns that are all that remain of the Roman Temple of Augustus.
When you are ready to leave this area, make a day of it by walking down to the nearby marina, along to the statue of Columbus and enjoy Las Ramblas.

“Also call Barri Gothic”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 13, 2013

If you like to walk down clean, well kept ancient streets, most too narrow for car traffic, with many little stores and restaurants, filled with both neighborhood people and tourists, then this is your place. Get off La Rambla and lose yourself in this maze of twisting, intertwining streets. Before you do this, I suggest that you take the free walking tour of the area with a guide from the Runner Bean tour group that meets in the Placa Rieal, just off La Rambla. Check their internet website (runnerbeantours.com) for tours offered, schedules and meeting places. Also get a good, detailed map of the area. Runner Bean can help you with that and restaurant suggestions too. I have received positive reports about the Good Bacelona tours. They meet at the monument to Christopher Columbus in the middle of the traffic circle in the port area at the base of La Rambla.
