Owner description: This fascinating area is steeped in history, with city hall located in the same spot where kings once reigned. You'll find narrow streets and squares here, with Gothic mansions, museums, historic churches, bars and restaurants. The Placa del Rei is reputedly the place where King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella welcomed Columbus after his voyage to America.

Wonderful medieval layout & building styles. Can be nicely "edgy" at night. Loads of fascinating streets history & sights

Just get lost and wander in the alleys with nice cafees and shops.
Find the hidden placas away from La Rambla.

A gorgeous part of town and well worth a visit, to see the historical buildings that now house museums and visitor tours, and also to get a glimpse of the real Barcelona outside of the tourist trap areas like just-next-door La Ramblas. The high walls, stunning ancient doors (one that was a Roman crypt), and stone steps everywhere makes you feel transported back in time, while housing a wide variety of shops and cafes that remind you it's the 21st century! Beautifully preserved and kept, it's well worth a stroll through to give you a proper feel for the real city.

Narrow old streets which offer you surprises at every corner. Nice buildings, shops and small restaurants everywhere. Just beautiful!

We enjoyed the diffent feel that comes from living in confined places. Very narrow pedestrian walk ways are the streets of the time, and 6 or more story buildings of the period make for canyon like experiences.
