I had never been to Barcelona, and don't speak English. When I arrived I experienced the most amazing service from a lovely and energetic girl. I don't know her name but arrived on Saturday 25th August - thank you!

The hotel is exactly as described in previous reviews - clean, a bit tired and small but fantastic location and good value for money.

Had to travel to Barcelona and i found this cheap hotel appropriate for my needs. That was before leaving. What happened is here: I arrived on Sunday and got the room immediately at 12.30. Later i realized why - all hotel except the ground floor with reception was without air-condition.

It's an old building and it can happen of course, but what customer would expect is that receptionist would at least explain what's happening, right? Well, he didn't say a word!!! Note that those days were the hottest days in past decade in Barcelona (at least they told me so) and i had a room on 4th floor with direct sun exposure all day long in an old building, so the temperature was over 40-45+ degrees all day and not much lower at night.

Ok, that was on Sunday and workers couldn't come because of that, so we had to wait on Monday when in early evening it was finally fixed. I left on Tuesday so at least my next night was ok since i couldn't sleep much the night before.

When leaving there was the same male receptionist and he didn't say a single word about a horror to which all guests have been exposed and which ruined my stay in Barcelona completely. No explanation, no trying to find an excuse, nothing! I had to open the subject and asked him if i get kind of compensation for ruined vacations, but he answer in rude way what do i expect. I said at least a lunch or free drinks would be ok, but was stopped immediately by him talking about the damage for the owners in a rude way. And no excuse again.

These things can happen in old building, but these kind of receptionist and attitude are not acceptable. Two other other receptionists (female), were both pleasant, understandable, willing to help or at least caring about situation. Otherwise the hotel has good location, but the room is very basic (it's what you can expect in 2 star hotel), double bed is very small, single bed size. They have a fridge and 15" TV from eighties. I'd give 3 stars for overall rating, but because of the nightmare and ignorant receptionist with bad attitude i really do not recommend it.

I just loved this place the moment i set foot in the door. It's cosy, atmospheric, comfortable and if you have a view over the front street, you can people-watch to your heart's consent. the staff were great, you're only seconds from a great restaurant - the santa ana - and the rambla is only seconds away as well. I'd definitely come back here.

Room Tip: the rooms at the front are for people-watchers. the ones at the back look a lot quieter

My husband and I stayed at Hotel Cortes for 4 nights. The location of the hotel is great - one street away from Placa de Catalunya, and just off Las Ramblas. The area felt completely safe even at midnight.
The room itself is basic, the bathroom is a bit grotty. The walls are very thin and have no ability to keep any noise out. The floors are tiled so you could hear every squeak of chairs / beds, doors banging and talking in the corridor. Our room was facing the courtyard and when there weren't any noises from inside of the hotel, it was quite quiet with very little street noise.
The breakfast is not a buffet. You get three pastry things on a plate with a slice of ham and cheese each. It's the same everyday so it got boring on our 3rd,4th day. It was a small breakfast room and the service was fast but certainly not with a smile.
The staff weren't the friendlist, and some looked a little intimidating.
But at the end of the day, it was OK for the price we paid so can't complaint too much.

Room Tip: ask for a room on the top floor facing the courtyard

This is the perfect location for the traveler that does not intend spending too much time in their hotel room.
It is very close to the metro and train station. Also the bus from the airport drops you off 2 min away from the hotel. If you are flying from or to the Girona airport it is 2 metro stops from the bus station that that takes you to that airport.
The rooms were poor, and the shower leaked. This caused the door to swell and was difficult to close. The walls were a little scruffy as well.
Breakfast was simple but good. It ends at 11am unlike most other hotels I have stayed at, which is very nice. It means you don't have to rush in the morning to catch breakfast.
All of this was over looked as it was still a great price location ratio.

Room Tip: The inside rooms are a lot more silent that the ones that are street facing.

The hotel definitely needs some serious renovation, but how much time do you stay in your room anyway? Great location, spacious room, quiet, good breakfast, good value for money. The stuff was good, nothing special, but if you ask them for help, you'll get it. We had a late flight home so we left our things there which was very convenient.

Situated just off Las Ramblas and a 2min walk to the Placa de Catalunya (where there are train and metro stations), Hotel Cortes is in a perfect location. Room was clean and simple - air conditioning took a while too cool the room down though. Also free wireless. Staff were helpful but not overtly friendly. Good value for money.
