We stayed at the Hotel Espana in September 2012. The hotel has been renovated to a really high standard and is beautiful and modern but as retained the elegance of a bygone era. It really is stunning. The rooms are designed to be relaxing and are not bright but have a very mellow low light feel to them. The bathroom was lovely but staff could do with making sure the fittings are checked as our soap tray in the bathroom was hanging off.
The staff are extremely professional and very attentive in the lobby and the bars and restaurants.
However, we had a room at the front of the hotel overlooking the pavemented street/avenue - only the odd taxi comes through the road which was lovely in the day but on Saturday night/Sunday morning the street became a thoroughfare for revellers leaving nightclubs and it was hideously noisy up until 5.30 a.m. We were unable to sleep for most of the night which was a real shame. If we went back there we would choose a room at the back of the hotel. The other downside was coming back after a day out shopping on Saturday and finding the maid had left our room door open. Luckily the corridors are very dark and probably no one would have realised but it was a really panicky moment for us checking that nothing had been stolen and indeed no one was in our room!
The roof terrace/bar is fantastic - very relaxing and modern with impeccable service. We waited on the terrace having a last glass of wine before we returned to the airport and it was a real haven after the hustle and bustle of the city.
