This is a nice little hotel situated about 15 minutes walk to La Ramblas and it being in a quiet residential area should not put you off.

Sadly the Spa Facilities were closed for maintenance during our stay preventing us giving it 5 out of 5.

The staff are very very helpful and welcoming. Rooms are spacious, comfy and clean. We only ate breakfast at the hotel and this was acceptable and reasonably priced.

Bar prices were very good. €3 for a very LARGE Spanish brandy.

I can not find anything bad about this and is good value for money.

Would recommend and would use again.

Just returned from a long weekend in barcelonastaying at this hotel. The hotel was very close to the port and the rambles. It is just off ave parralel, which is one of the main avenues in barcelona centre. The hotel was clean with friendly helpful staff. The rooms and hoteliers modern with a boutique feel about them. The spa was small but adequate. I would definitely stay in this hotel again.

My wife and I enjoyed our weekend stay at Hotel Grums. The staff were very friendly, helpful and accommodating from the moment of our arrival to our departure. Breakfast was part of our package for this hotel and the food. The quantity and quality of the food was very good and more than sufficient. The hotel is situated in a residential area and Las Rambles and the port areas are only a short walk away, the metro is only around the corner from the hotel. The only fault I would have with this hotel is that the service was very poor in the bar and restaurant during the evening as a shortage of staff seemed to be a problem. The only other issue were the towels in our bathroom which were threadbare and not very plentiful.Overall we did enjoy our stay here and I would definitely recommend it for a stay for comfort and location.

Room Tip: Avoid rooms by the lift.

The Hotel Grums in our opinion is just an ‘ok’ hotel, nothing more, nothing less! This hotel simply did the job but didn’t leave a lasting impression on us in any way. It was our base for 3 days before we joined our cruise ship. If we re-visited Barcelona we would probably not choose to stay at the Hotel Grums again, mainly because of the location (grubby area and too far from the centre) Also because the shower-rooms badly need updating and the rooms need redesigning with more practical features. I’ve explained our findings in more detail below.

The good points :-)
• The hotel was reasonably priced compared to most others we looked at. Barcelona hotels seem quite a bit more expensive than other European cities we’ve stayed in.
• It’s a modern hotel with very clean and pleasant furnishings in the spacious public areas on the ground level and the first floor. These areas were so much nicer than the rooms themselves! I have put photos on this review showing how nice the lounge area is.
• Free wi-fi that worked well in our room and throughout the hotel. This was very much appreciated.
• Small bottles of water are supplied free in the rooms and a very handy little see-through room-fridge to keep them and other drinks in, but the hotel need to place a notice by the bottles saying they’re free!! We bought water for 2 days until we read on Tripadvisor that it’s supplied at no extra cost!
• A good sized room safe is provided and most surprisingly is free to use. Great peace of mind at no extra charge!
• The air-conditioning in the room was a god-send! Efficient and easy to use (once you grasped that you had to hold the on/off button in for a few seconds to operate it!)
• The double bed is extra wide and we both found it very clean and comfortable. We slept well every night but take earplugs as this really helped us.
• There is a free self-service coffee machine in the lounge area but I actually thought the coffee was awful (tasted like vending machine coffee!) so it was of no use to me at all! I have read reviews to say there are also snacks available but we never saw these appear! There are some nice looking apples in a large bowl though!
• The reception staff were not unpleasant...that’s all I can say really! No special qualities to mention, they were just functional. There was a dark haired young man on duty as we left who was actually a very pleasant and helpful chap! I wish I could remember his name to give him a mention!! It was around 2pm on Tuesday 3rd Sept!
• A great little local cafe can be found just around the corner! Not the one next door that other reviewers have mentioned as we thought that looked too cramped (and was closed our first morning which was a Sunday) and there was no outdoor seating unlike the one we found and used each day! The owners speak little English but ask for the menu as it has pictures you can point at and everything there was very reasonably priced. Lovely coffee, fresh orange juice and fresh baguettes with Spanish salamis, ham, bacon, eggs etc. etc. Wish I could remember the name but I think it’s got the word Parador or Paradol in it!! We certainly never felt the need to eat the fairly expensive hotel breakfast (not included)!
• Plenty of little bars and cafes are dotted about very nearby the hotel and of course the very useful Lidl is right near the hotel!

Now for the not so good bits :-(
• The shower space was large and the water pressure was efficient but the shower-room and basin area in the room were in a very poor state and in need of complete redecoration (unsightly stains on the wall, tarnished taps, filthy corners etc). The towels were replaced as frequently as needed but they are just beginning to be in need of being renewed completely as they are now becoming a bit hard and off-white! One day they forgot to clean the room so we had no clean towels! The receptionist gave us some from the spa that were all packed up in plastic bags but unfortunately they smelled awful (like they hadn’t dried them properly before folding and packaging them) so we used some of our own! The wash basin is placed in the main bedroom as there is no room in the shower-room but it wasn’t a problem, just a bit odd! The tap was hard to operate as it was too modern and impractical. It took ages to turn off each time. I have posted some pictures of the grubby areas that need attention because they have to be seen to be believed!
• A big lack of hooks on the doors or walls!! The only hook was in the shower-room and needed a foot-stool (or a handy husband!) in order for me to reach it! This is a frequent gripe of mine and this hotel room was no different! What is it with lack of hooks or really high ones in hotel rooms? They could create so much extra hanging and storage space if they provided them! Such a simple and helpful thing but can hardly ever be found!
• Our room was a pretty small one! If we’d booked for a longer period we would have asked to move rooms but it was adequate for 3 nights if you don’t mind getting in each other’s way a lot! All the rooms vary in size (we looked into some others that were being cleaned and they were much bigger than ours!) so if this bothers you ring ahead and ask for a larger room. Our only specific request was for a high floor and we got floor 5 which was the highest floor for our room type. Floor 6 (the highest) has suites only.
• The emphasis in the rooms is on modern and trendy but in reality the fancy dim lighting and strange shaped furniture is just impractical with no thought given to storage or manoeuvring easily around the small room!
• There is considerable internal noise from other people using the hotel. Loud televisions, toilets flushing, people talking and early morning leavers can be heard at all times of the day and night!
• There are no great views as such from any of the rooms. The front overlooks the road which although is not a busy main road, I imagine there would still be some noise from constantly passing vehicles. The rear overlooks the back of private residential blocks of flats and the small outdoor dining area of the hotel.
• We didn’t particularly like the area the hotel is situated in. It’s a grubby and smelly area (dog waste and urine is sadly everywhere you walk in Barcelona!) and this modern hotel seems out of place somehow! It is quite a walk from Las Ramblas, at least 15 to 20 minutes and although we generally felt quite safe, it’s quite a secluded walk late at night. It’s a good 10 minute walk from the nearest metro though we never found a need to use it as we always walked everywhere!
• One of our main reasons for booking this hotel was it’s close proximity to the port. We had the idea that we could casually saunter over to our ship with all our luggage as the hotel is relatively close to the port...NO WAY! It may look close but the road system does not allow for pedestrians or vehicles to cross it at the closest point to the hotel! The port is big and our ship happened to be berthed at the furthest end. The walk would have taken around 45 to 55 minutes! Simply no point as the taxi cost just 10 Euros with a tip. We did walk with our cases for a few minutes to the nearest main road to get the taxi as they fly by on the main roads every few seconds so it was easier!

We didn't use the basement level spa so can't give any comments apart from the towels we used from the spa not being very fresh!

Hope this review helps anyone planning on booking a room in Barcelona to decide whether to choose this hotel or not. If you’ve already booked the Hotel Grums then I hope the tips I've given about the nearby cafe and requesting a larger room before arriving help you too!

Dear Sr. or Madam,

I would like to thank you very much for taking the time to explain your opinion. Your feedback is especially important for us to continue improving.

I have taken good note about your comments related to maintenance in the hotel. We will take your opinion into account. Just to let you know that at the present moment (low season) the hotel is involved in an updated maintenance action plan in order to solve this problems.

But just wanted to point anyone reading this that the walls of the bathrooms are decorated with paper wall (bud ideas from decorators...) and sometimes they get the humidity of the shower. So the photos you can see from our guest it's not the fact of dirty, or luck of cleaning,

Fortunately and at the present moment we only have this problem with 3 bathrooms, but we have decided to remove the paper wall from all bathrooms within our annual updated maintenance action plan, in order to prevent future problems.

About the free self-service coffee machine in the lounge area and the missing snacks: we do no provide snacks, What we do certainly provide is some pastry's. The free self -service also gives you the option of a variety selection of teas, and a chocolate option.

Great views froms the rooms: this is an urban hotel located in a quiet neighborhood called Poble Sec, a place with a lot of history and near the castle walls of the old part of the historical Barcelona and next to the Montjuïc park, and very near the terminal cruise. So the fact that is old does not mean that is scummy.

Once again, thank you for your taking you time to explain us your point of view.

Yours sincerely,

Mark Mackay

When we first booked this hotel, we knew the reservation by non-refundable for an October, 2013 stay. When we got blind-sided by a medical situation and had to cancel our entire trip, I thought I would at least give it a shot at trying to get our deposit back. I called the folks through whom we booked the hotel (spainbrokers.com - yay for you!) around the end of July and offered a copy of our flight insurance claim. They were able to get the hotel to agree to refund our deposit. It showed up on our credit card statement the beginning of August. Thanks so much for being so understanding. In an awful situation, it helped to know there are some caring people left in the world! Moral of the story - be sure to buy insurance on the individually booked portions of your trip. Other places were not so accommodating!

The hotel is a modern looking oasis and was a wonderful location for catching our cruise ship. Actually, we found it a short walk to the area for catching a tour bus, going to Avenue Parallel and Las Rambles too. We were so happy with the informative and congenial staff at the Hotel Grums. I was especially happy since the management was able to accommodate my request for a room on the 6th floor. We had the breakfast included package and were very pleased that we upgraded to that choice. Since we were there for 4 days before our cruise, we were able to take advantage of their large, scrumptious buffet that even included cava or wine. Our rooms were lovely, with a balcony. The only thing I would have requested was a lighted make-up mirror, since the lighting in the sink area left a little to be desired. There was only a hanging lamp on the left side that hung too low to give off good light and one lighted strip on the right side of the mirror. I asked others on our cruise and their rooms had lights all around their mirror above the sink. A minor inconvenience but it still would have been nice to be able to see to put on my make-up and it also made it difficult for my husband to put in his contacts. Hotel staff kept everything very clean. They even left us bottled water every day in our mini bar. The surrounding area has local apartments and we felt very safe in our comings and goings, no matter in what direction. The taxi ride from the airport to the hotel was 31E. Make sure you write down the address and precise directions to the hotel so you can hand it to the driver. I included the latitude and longitude which he plugged into his GPS. Hotel Grums kept our luggage safe for us since we wanted to explore. Our room wasn't ready since we arrived very early in the day. I think the taxi ride from the hotel to the ship was 10E. Wish I was going to Barcelona again soon. I would definitely stay at Hotel Grums again...and again! Thank you for making our stay a memorable one!
