I was told Port Vell means the old port. However, you will see a place with brand new facelift which offers a strong contrast to the Gothic area just across the street. Port Vell stretches from the Columbus Monument to the Barceloneta, offers endless possibilities to enjoy your leisure time, such as Imax Theater, Aquarium, Maremagnum Shopping Mall and many other eating joints. Following a long historic process, the Port Vell, with its landmark buildings and monuments, now gleams like one of the most valuable pearls on the coast.

Walk up the wooden plank bridge to view the privately owned boats that dock in the harbor. Cable cars are moving up the tower. Sea gulls are flying free. Columbus standing tall on the monument. Water sculptures floating on water. At times the bridge will open up for the boat to pass through. What a magnificent sight.

Don't miss it. It is one of the Bus Turistic destinations (Red Route).

After a walk up and down the La Rambla, an explore of the Gothic Quarter, it is nice to visit the harbour and experience a totally different side of Barcelona.

You can reach Port Vell via a walk way from Colom which is at the south end of La Rambla. For me this was a great chill out spot. There is a shopping complex there plus restaurants, IMAX cinema etc.

It is also a stop on the hop on/off bus route which saves some of the walking.

Toilets are located in the shopping/restaurant complex.

We walked along the harbour on several occasions. It truely is beautiful. There large expensive boats docked up, the fish swimming in the water. We followed the port down to the beach and stopped of for sangria along the way. Relaxing and lovely to be there

During our visit to Barcelona, we used to pass the pier on daily basis. First, it’s a nice walk through the Al Rambla. Second, the atmosphere there is great. In the morning, people are just walking enjoying themselves, watching the seagulls, having something to eat at the Magnum Mall, or just sitting at the benches overlooking the water. The pier itself has a very nice design. The atmosphere is very pleasant and somewhat relaxing. At the end of the pier you can find the Barcelona Aquarium (in case you want to take your children. don't expect too much though). During the evening, it’s filled with people selling fake purses, wallets, etc. (in case you're interested). The restaurants at the Magnum mall are still operating, so you can have a nice meal or some coffee. If you’re there during the evening, just go and sit on one of the benches at the far end of the pier, very romantic and chilled.

We strolled along the promenade and walked the full length of this area on a magical autumn sunny day. Take a picnic or grab an ice-cream, this is a pleasurable place to be. The marina is lovely and if you sit and watch the boats go through the opening bridge out into the sea, you will see a great piece of work. Walk across the bridge and discover the shopping centre which was a cool respite. Continue along the foreshore to the beach and its a perfect morning/day in the wonderful space they have created.
