“Room with a view”
Reviewed January 27, 2014

It's been more than 30 years since we visited Barcelona and stayed at this hotel in the old part of the city with a magnificent view of the cathedral out the small balcony windows. The hotel has lost none of its charm and ambience - the staff still friendly and welcoming. You won't find a better spot from which to explore the city on foot or by subway as you are very centrally located. Remember to ask for a room on the square and enjoy. Note: the square hosts numerous events throughout the year which can be a bit lively (and noisy) for those who want complete peace and serenity.

Room Tip: Make sure you ask location of your room - either on the square or off.

We stayed at the Hotel Colon following a cruise in November of 2013. We paid the slight bit extra for a Cathedral view room, which I recommend most highly. Even though we arrived early in the day after disembarkation, the hotel had a room for us. So much is within easy walking distance - the Cathedral; the City Museum (an oft-overlooked gem); La Rambla; and for the more distant sites, the HOHO (Hop On, Hop Off) bus. Service was excellent - the desk staff was helpful and friendly, and everyone was welcoming and warm. We did not take breakfast at the hotel - there are a few restaurants right on the square - but the hotel car in the evening offers a nice light menu which is great for Americans who just can't/won't eat dinner late late in the evening! The Dining Room looks lovely, however!

Because the square in front of the hotel and cathedral is pedestrian only, the nights are quieter and you can look out and do some enjoyable people-watching. Cannot recommend highly enough!

Room Tip: Pay the little up charge for a cathedral view. You will enjoy it!

As all the other reviews suggest, the location is perfect. Hotel is nice, possibly showing its age, still firmly stick in the peach/green/yellow decor - but who cares when the staff are lovely, the breakfast is good and you are in the right location. Our one minor downside is that the air-conditioning is stuck at a 'hotel-wide' setting which was around 25 degrees, too warm for us at night time (so we had to keep our terrace door open)... but that wasn't a major factor. Would stay here again.

Stay in this hotel during this New Year celebration. Perfect location for both shoping and to experience the old Barcelona on foot. But be aware that you are located in an area with a lot of other turists.
The hotel is nice and the room big (5 floor) and with bed that suits us very well. Staff service- minded and able to help us when we need any help/advice. Had only one dinner at the hotel which was well prepared.
One negative experience was the mold smell in our room was, even to be in Spain, on the high side.

This is a lovely hotel, and the location for most of the sites in Barcelona are within walking distance or easily reached. My sons and I used the metro frequently, as the stop is close to the hotel, and it is very easy to use. We also walked many places as the weather in January is lovely----not too hot, and not at all cold. We had a room that had a "separate living room" with a hide away, so my 20 yr old sons and I were very comfortable, each of us with our own beds, and I got my own room. We did have a view of the Cathedral, and it was somewhat noisy, but it did quiet down after midnight. I agree with all the reviews re: the staff: while everyone was polite, no one was particularly helpful. I used guide books and made my own plans, read maps, and easily toured Barcelona. I have to mention, that MY hotel reservations did NOT include breakfast, and a note on my check in was very clearly stated that breakfast would be served for 18,00E per person. As that was expensive, we did not have breakfast there, and ate frequently at the surrounding restaurants that were cheaper, and excellent. I would stay at this hotel again, if I go back to Barcelona, but I would ask for a room in the back, and now that I know breakfast was included for others, I would ask about that.

Room Tip: I'm guessing rooms away from Cathedral are quieter. If you need three beds, they do have it ava...

Honestly couldn't imagine a better location. First time to Barcelona and we fell in love with the place. Not only do you have so much history around you you have an endless array of shopping in brands, department stores, and if you are like us, you will be drawn to all the beautiful boutique stores for clothing, jewellery, arts, crafts... Everything,, and so reasonably priced,,, this place is the place to shop.

Bus tourista (hop on/off tour bus) right across the square- highly recommend the south tour and walk up to see the Sagrada familia without taking the North route (personal opinion only).

Rooms were lovely and very well kept.. gorgeous little Juliet style balconies which should could go out on, Safe in room great for storing valuables and plenty of hanging space. Great little separate bathroom (with towel warmer) off entrance which can all be closed off from main room to keep it cosy. Breakfast was incuded and was extensive and great. Good TV and a few more English speaking channels than Paris.

Hotel staff at front desk speak good English. Only thing I would recommend for staff would be to make guests aware of events or public holidays proactively on arrival. We didn't realise it was a public holiday on the Monday we were there and had planned a full day of shopping as the Internet told us all the winter sales started that day. It was our last day in the city so we had spent all the previous days doing tourist things that we could have left until the Monday as they were the only things operating. There was also a great parade on the Sunday night (Christmas Kings parade) which we found out about by chance. This was fabulous and we would have been really disappointed if we had of missed it. Don't get us wrong, the staff were very attentive and helpful when asked, it's just that somethings are good to be more proactive about when you have tourists.

We will be back.

Room Tip: Rooms at back were reasonably quiet

We stayed during Christmas for 6 nights. The first 2 nights were disappointing. We were placed on the first floor. Trucks backing up, doors slamming did not allow for a night's sleep. The 2nd night, ( we had asked to move, however, we had to wait until the 3rd night) there was a leak somewhere. They thought it came from our room. It did not, although it did from 2 doors down. Workers working late into the night leaving the balcony doors open so it was a bit chilly. The new room was on the 5th floor, seemed larger and cheerier. There was minimal noise. One thing we noticed is that the door handles (not knobs), do not turn, therefore one must pull the door closed, resulting in a bit of noise. The hotel staff was helpful from making reservations, finding converters for our electronics, to changing money. We had a traditional Catalan lunch at the hotel on Christmas Day. It was one of the most delicious meals we remember having anywhere. There were 3 of us and we were in total agreement. The location of the hotel was in the square of the main Cathedral. It could not have been more perfect. There were small Christmas markets, performers, crowds enjoying the area. It could not have been more wonderful. The breakfast was varied, plentiful, and delicious!

Room Tip: Make sure you are on a high floor.
