Owner description: The Fundació Joan Miró was created by Miró himself, at first principally with works from his own private collection, with a desire to set up an internationally recognised centre in Barcelona for Miró scholarship and contemporary art research, and to disseminate the collection. The Fundació opened to the public on 10 June 1975 and has since become a dynamic centre in which Joan Miró's work coexists with cutting-edge contemporary art. With an interdisciplinary approach, the Fundació organises temporary exhibitions of 20th and 21st century artists as well as academic activities and projects in collaboration with other institutions and organisations. Through its exhibition and educational programmes, the Fundació Joan Miró explores lines of research linked to the work of Miró and to contemporary art. The Fundació is located in a building designed by Josep Lluís Sert, making it one of the few museums anywhere in the world in which the complicity between artist and architect underpins the dialogue between the works and the space that houses them. The Fundació offers an overview of the landscapes of Joan Miró's art and life, creating an enriching dialogue with other artists from the 20th and 21st centuries.

Even for non art buffs this gallery is worthy of a lengthy visit for the design of the gallery and its place on the Barcelona skyline. Miro's work was beautifully displayed and the supporting text and film was very helpful in understanding his artistic journey. A cursory glance at the unfortunate decades from the 20's to the 70's emphasizes the integrity of Miro unlike some of the other big artistic names on the tourist trail who seemed happy to stand on the sidelines and feed their respective obsessions. Recommend you get off the HOHO bus and enjoy the serenity.

The special exhibition was particularly well curated. The theme was on horizon. The show worked well given the references to Urgell and Miro. The permanent collection is genius. The gallery truly enriched my appreciation of Miro. The simplicity of line and the exuberance of colour speaks to the soul. I gained a sense of scale for the work in joy of Barcelona as a backdrop in the bright Catalan sunshine.

Our favourite art gallery in Barcelona was the Fundacio Joan MIro. The audio guide helped explain the progression of his work. And after an interesting visit we could enjoy lunch in the restaurant/cafeteria in the building (which is not possible in most of the other galleries we visited)

We enjoyed our visit of this museum set up by a foundation to preserve the artist work and others.
Amid spectacular views of the city, the inside is just as compelling. The movies of Miro at work are excellent and well worth taking the time to sit and enjoy.
Take the finicular up from the city, we came from the city side by way of the Placa Espana, quite a walk, but, very rewarding for those who can handle steps and a lot of walking.
Miro:Another Catalan master.

Miro's colorful, distinctive creations are beautifully showcased in this museum, with the views as you ascend above Barcelona an added attraction. I wish we had had more time to explore his works, where dark and complex themes can lurk amid the playful surfaces. What an extraordinary artist--another amazing Catalan.
