“Generally Great”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 16, 2007

We spent four delightful days at this magnificent modern hotel. Great common areas, beautiful room with huge, luxurious bath (we had a standard room with 2 sinks, tub and stall shower with 3 showerheads, toilet and bidet in seperate area) and generally terrific service. Location is right on the water, but away from the old city and shopping. Two quibbles; 1. They charge you for everything, down to 4 euros for coffee you make yourself in your room and ridiculously high 20 euro daily internet access. 2. The concierge was consistantly wrong; they told us we didn't need advance restaurant reservations and we couldn't get into a place we wanted to go. Similarly with a club table and then they said "no problem" getting a cab at 5:30 AM to the airport only to find no cabs (all the clubs were letting out) which forced us to pay for an overpriced van to make our flight.

Hotel Arts is an "eyesore" from the outside - but beautiful inside. Very modern decor, fabulous rooms with great views of city & ocean. Pool good with excellent staff to help you with towels etc - they keep an eye on sunbeds which have not been used for a while and basically move the belongings so you can have the sunbed when the pool area is busy. Why is it people think by putting a book on a sunbed it belongs to them!!!
Hotel Arts is right at the beach with some great restaurants. I stayed at The MAjestic Hotel for 3 nights first to visit the city then down to the Arts for the beach part of my holiday.

Plan to revisit in April 07.

The hotel at the time and may still be, the tallest building in Spain, well the neighboring "Mapfri" building is the same height.

The location is unbeatable. On the waterfront, a five-star world-class hotel, with almost everything to be expected of it.

The room was fantastic. The automatic blackout shades were a great amenity, to block the breathtaking view of the water, city, and the shimmering "Frank Geary" 'fish' sculpture below... while recovering from jet-lag.

The bathroom was in a class of its own. It was nicer than many hotels / resorts "community spa areas"

Dining, beaches, discotheques, all 15 floors down, and 50 yards from the front door.

The concierges were extremely helpful, with any request. One of the best perks.

My only gripe was the security / front desk people were rude (condescending) and disrespectful:

We were constantly being challenged, as to what we were doing, what were our names, room number etc... I can understand this once or twice.

We stood out, American, meager Spanish speaking "weak mexican-spanglish at best", and dressed to casual country-club attire standards excluding my flip-flops (unless heading out on the town.)

The point is "We stood out" so I expected them to learn my name, or recognize there is the American with the $12 flip-flops that has been here all week.

At ~$1000/night I expect that courtesy from staff. Which they failed to do, or intentionally did not do (aside from the Concierges and Bar / Restaurant staff who were great)

It finally became semi-entertaining. Lobby staff, "Um, excuse me, may I help you?" Me, (continuing to walk towards the elevator) "Sure, send up three ice cold aqua's con gas, no wait two con-gas, one no gas, gracias!, it's room 1520"

Overall a great hotel, I loved it, the slight disrespect aside, I still highly recommend it.

The interior of the hotel is great - as mentioned by several other members. However, the minibar prices were crazy. After having had a little espresso from the in-room machine, I was visited by a maid (entering without knocking....), who kindly advised me that it cost €4 a cup and that I would be better off taking my coffee elsewhere. Nice thought! - And €7 for a soft drink. But the interior was the styliest I have ever experienced and the food good. Stayed there for a conference, but would never have paid for it out of my own pocket. Compared to some downtown hotels it is a little off track, and I would instead recommend staying closer to e.g. the Gothic quarter (see my recommendation for Hotel Colon). The bed, though, great! Even though - while searching for a lighter I dropped - they apparently never clean under the bed.....

Booked 2 rooms with AMEX Platinum travel, and both rooms were upgraded upon arrival. Check in was a little slow, but wow... Our suites were fantastic. Huge, with fantastic views of the city and the Med. 1 1/2 bathrooms, large living area and a separate bedroom area. Just beautiful. Best showers ever!

There were many restaurants and beaches within walking distance, so we only ate breakfast at the hotel. (That was $160 Euros for 6 people - buffet)

Great service at the pools, bell staff, cleaning staff and front desk. Restaurant on site for breakfast buffet was adequete, but nothing special.

Overall, a new favorite hotel for me!

The Hotel Arts has wonderful installations and superb rooms. The concierge was consistently helpful. The rest of the service however was truly dismal. We waited 1h30 to be served a salad at "Bites", the waitress was resentful at our asking the reason for the delay. The quality of food procured from room service was poor. After having reported plumbing problems daily for 4 consecutive days, no attempt had been made to resolve the matter; the receptionists did not appear concerned that no attention had been paid to our requests. In general this hotel seems to live on its past reputation, one that no longer deserves.

I was lucky enough to stay at the Arts as part of a corporate weekend conference. From the outside the hotel is not particularly attractive, looking more like a high rise office block. However, once inside the stylish modern decor and rooms more than make up for it - I've never seen so many fresh flowers all in one place!. My room on the 10th floor was genuinely breathtaking. It was extremely spacious and the views were fantastic. The bathroom is out of this world with a separate shower room (complete with seat and multiple jets) which is like a mini wet room and mood lighting. The room is full of gadgets - automatic blinds, Bang & Oulsen TV and CD - it look a while to figure it all out. I didn't get to use many of the hotel facilities (gym, pool) as most of the weekend was planned by the conference organisers but the breakfast was great with plenty of choice. The hotel bar did seem a bit expensive but then we were drinking cocktails (and I guess the owners think if you can afford to stay here, then you can afford the bar bill)! My only niggle was that I had to ask 3 times before the batteries in my TV remote were changed but other the this the staff were very friendly and attentive. The hotel is well placed for sightseeing and nightlife (I think it is on the route of the hop on/hop off bus) and is right on the beach. Overall, it is probably the best hotel I have ever stayed in but if the price tag makes you feel faint, Hotel 1898 on Las Ramblas is very good at probably half the cost.
