Owner description: The Basilica of the Sagrada Familia is a monumental church devoted to the Holy Family: Jesus, Mary and Joseph. Construction began in 1882, based on plans drawn up by the architect Francisco de Paula del Villar, and Antoni Gaudi was commissioned to continue the project in 1883. The Temple has always been an expiatory church, built only from donations. As Gaudi said: "The Expiatory Church of the Sagrada Familia is made by the people and is mirrored in them. It is a work that is in the hands of God and the will of the people." In 2010, Pope Benedict XVI consecrated the site as a minor basilica.

I've wanted to visit Sagrada Familia ever since I first saw pictures of it, and it did NOT disappoint. Honestly, the exterior is pretty weird, what with the perpetual construction cranes blocking the view and decorative fruit sculptures on the roof, but the interior is one of the most beautiful places I've ever been.

The pillars are just massive and keep drawing your eyes upwards, and the stained glass is so so beautiful. (It's mostly mosaics of glass shards, not windows depicting religious scenes like most other churches.) I visited in the late afternoon, around 3pm, and the light was SO gorgeous. The light coming through in green and red and yellow and then playing off the white stone of the interior was just ethereal. Seriously one of the most beautiful sights I've ever seen - you really have to visit!!

This is the most beautiful church I have ever visited, the interior and exterior are both extraordinary and very detailed. It is possible to ascend the towers: the Passion tower gives you a nice view of Barcelona (€4.50). The exhibition in the crypt is nice and explains everything you need to know about the church.

Suggestion: Buy your tickets online or you may have to wait for a very long time! It is not necessary to print them, but it may make things easier.

The most amazing Basilica I have ever been to and well worth the visit. Inside was a complete surprise. Plan ahead and book your tickets online. Easy to do http://visit.sagradafamilia.cat/?lang=en#tickets. We booked the tour with audio guide and a 9 am session. A shock to see the line up for the repurchased tickets but we were in within 15 minutes not hours like you would be if you didn't buy your tickets on line.

It is probably the largest tourist attraction in Barcelona, but don't let that put you off. The sheer scale of the building is staggering. If you are feeling fit enough, walk up the steps to the top of the building, rather than taking the list. There are also a few nice cafes and bars located nearby.
