Owner description: The Basilica of the Sagrada Familia is a monumental church devoted to the Holy Family: Jesus, Mary and Joseph. Construction began in 1882, based on plans drawn up by the architect Francisco de Paula del Villar, and Antoni Gaudi was commissioned to continue the project in 1883. The Temple has always been an expiatory church, built only from donations. As Gaudi said: "The Expiatory Church of the Sagrada Familia is made by the people and is mirrored in them. It is a work that is in the hands of God and the will of the people." In 2010, Pope Benedict XVI consecrated the site as a minor basilica.

“Unbelievable”
Reviewed December 4, 2013

We were blown away by the design and wondered what the native Barcelonians (?) would have thought about it in the late 19th century. It is bordering on "out of this world".
Definitely worth a visit (incl trip up the steeple).
Get there early when it opens to miss the queues.

“Breathtaking!”
Reviewed December 4, 2013

Rainer Zerbst said, "It is probably impossible to find a church building anything like it in the entire history of art"[12] and Paul Goldberger called it, "The most extraordinary personal interpretation of Gothic architecture since the Middle Ages." It is simply Breathtaking!

“Truly worth the queues”

Gaudi's enchanting work of art, plenty of time to visit before it's completion in 2020! A wonderful experience which made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up!

“Wow!”
Reviewed December 3, 2013

If you only go to one church in Europe it has to be this one! It is so different to what you'd normally expect from a European church! The line ups were insane. You must reserve tickets. It took us about 5 minutes to get in with those, but the line ups stretched around the building. Don't spend your vacation in a line up, reserve tickets!

“Modern Art as it should be”
Reviewed December 3, 2013

This looks a little like Disney does cathedrals in the pictures, but it is a stunningly reverent and modern take on a cathedral. After touring old cathedrals in Europe I was awe struck by how Gaudi had updated the idea of the cathedral while still keeping all the majesty and inspirational qualities of the old. To me this is what modern art and architecture should be, an improvement on the old without losing all that is best of the old. Just comparing the amount of natural light in this building with what appear to be essentially similar traditional cathedrals is amazing. I'm still not sure quite how he did that.
