My wife and I were in Barcelona for a few days before our cruise and we had read about the market in the Rick Steves Barcelona Book (and we had seen it mentioned in his TV episode on Barcelona). This place is a cornucopia of everything edible. You don't want to rush your visit, just take your time walking up and down the aisles in (both east and west and then take the north and south ones to make sure you see every bit of it). We decided to get the makings for sandwiches and other treats, plus a bottle of wine, and took everything back to our hotel. Howevrer, you can definitely order something at one of the many sit down or stand up counters and eat there. You can buy prepared sandwiches or even get something to order. The vendors with dozens of different types of olives (many stuffed with rather exotic ingredients) and the many different types of fresh mushrooms were really unique. You will also see all types of meats and seafood offered for sale here. While it can be a little bit hard to find (there are no highly visible signs on the Las Ramblas to show you the way), I highly recommend this market for a visit whether you intend to sample their wares or not. (We asked for directions from a local who didn't speak much English but was very friendly and helpful.) This market is one of the best you will see anywhere in the world.
