I can imagine the Barri Gotic area with its narrow alleys and tall old buidings being a bit intimidating for someone used to a more open modern environment - it just takes a little getting used to - once you have, you'll enjoy it. It's what you come on holiday for - to see the city and how it lives.

Barri Gothic is the most fantastic sight I managed to visit in Barcelona!

I was lucky to leave in a guesthouse situated right on a small street of this district.
One may spend all day long walking up and down the wonderful streets of the district - and they are still safe!, watch and listen to street musicians from all over the world, get a good opportunity of shopping - almost all brands are represented here, have a nice dinner - lots of restaurants and open-air cafes.

My beloved place was the square in front of the Cathedral - I used to spend my nights here, listening to musician bands on Saturdays and watching Catalonian dances, break-dancers and singers on all other days.

The Cathedral itself is a gem inside of the district. And many museums and galleries add fantastic impressions as well.

That was the best experience we got there and definitely will go again when back to Barcelona!

Obviously with the Cathedral and several other highlighted places to see here, the Barri Gotic is a must-see part of any trip to Barcelona. But a friend, Jim Utz, recommended the area by saying, "You can get lost there...in a good way." And he was right. You'll never stay lost for long, and the warren of tiny streets features one surprise after another. Good places to eat, to shop, to relax, and then of course there is Cathedral Square -- I had the great good luck to come upon it just as the sardana was being danced -- this slow, circular dance (a bit Zorba-the-greek-ish) is something tourists love to see, and for some, to participate in, but it's a dance of, by and for the Catalan people. It has a social aspect as it brings them together, and a political one, as it unites them in deeper ways. Yes, there are more than a fair share of tourist shops, but it remains one of my favorite parts of a great city! Oh, and don't be afraid to get a bit lost...it's the best way to get to know a new city.
