Barcelona Central Garden Hostel

Stayed here for a couple of nights when I went to Barcelona. The staff there are amazing and very helpful. The rooms, bathrooms, kitchens are all very clean too. When we arrived at the hostel, one of the staff sat us down with a map and pictures of all the tourist attractions and explained to us what there is to see there and how to get around to places. Will definitely stay here again and recommend it to anyone!

This hostel is amazing, if you have to stay anywhere in Barcelona stay here!! The staff are incredible, really helpful made us dinner and breakfast and even took us out drinking. Im really hoping the rest of my hostels are as good as this one. Trust me you´ll make tones of friends!!! The actual accommodations themselves aren't amazing (they're still great) but the staff and the atmosphere are the best you can find anywhere. Would highly recommend this hostel to anyone traveling to Barcelona.

I and three other 18 year old guys came over for three nights looking to see as much of Barcelona as possible. The hostel provided great directions and it is incredibly central. As soon as we arrived we were asked what we wanted out of the city and were guided through maps and shown exactly what the staff recommend and also what they have discount for. It's worth noting that we asked about a water park - they didn't have discount vouchers for but the day after they had sourced them for us expecially.

The entire hostel is beautiful and very clean. It's also incredibly relaxed and friendly. We were eating and chatting to fellow guests all the time. There was also no concern with security as there is someone on the desk 24/7.

The staff felt like family and were always giving great advice and recommendations.

Free tours leave the hostel and the hostel also organises an outing to all sorts of attractions. They walk with you to the event and join for a drink after.

The staff all speak fantastic English and conveniently could cook very well after our pasta dish began to fail!

I'd definitely come back and would highly recommend this hostel. There's really nothing to fault! Thanks to the managers and Maria for being so accommodating.

The staff was incredible. The place was clean, very accessible, great location, and very comfortable. The staff even walked with me to the post office and try to work through my traveling issues, advocating for me. They went far and beyond for me as their guest. I really felt like they cared for my over well-being.

The atmosphere was nice. The beds were super comfortable. The showers had great water pressure and temperature. You can also borrow a hair dryer, which is great at no cost. They also have laundry available and had a great kitchen to cook in. It was a wonderful experience!

Barcelona central garden is one of the best hostels that I have ever stayed at. I travel quite a bit & have stayed at numerous hostels over the years and BCG hostel is definitely in my top 3. It must be noted that this is not a party hostel of any sort, but that doesn't mean it's lacks the social atmosphere that comes along with the party hostel tag. The staff are incredibly welcoming & sweet, they go beyond the call of duty in order to ensure that you have a great, authentic experience whilst staying in their city. When they welcome you, they sit you down & explain everything you need to know about the area, the do's & don't s, the prices, the public transport system, the cheapest & easiest way to see the attractions & they are genuinely interested to know about you & your travel stories/experiences, which makes you feel like a guest staying at their house rather than another no named customer that I have experienced at other hostels.
I don't want to go on forever about it, but all in all, it was an excellent place to stay as a solo traveler that wasn't keen to party too hard...not that I didn't, but the starting point was just not at the hostel. It's super, super clean, all the facilities are excellent & the location is perfect. I cannot give this place more praise. Special thanks to Maria & Julian, their company & advice was priceless & much appreciated.
If I ever go to Barcelona again, I will most definitely stay here again & I highly recommend it to anyone visiting the area.

Having spent 3 nights in Barcelona Central Garden I have to say there are a lot of good points but also a few no so good points about the place.

The location is very good, a short walk to Place de Catalunya and the infamous Las Ramblas, ideal for exploring the city centre on foot. Finding the hostel again might not be so easy as the only sign is on the entrance pillar and is about 6 inches square. Make a note of the surrounding cafe names or you could spend a long time finding it.

The staff are friendly but in our case, not good at maths. We paid 10% deposit but this wasn't taken off the final bill (paid in advance) so the cost was more than we expected. They have been very appologetic about the mistake but not actually refunded the overcharge. Also expect to pay a 20 euro deposit for your keys.

The private room was good for a hostel although the beds were a bit like bunk beds that had been put side by side rather than one on top of the other and only 1 thin pillow. I asked for another one but they didn't have one, only a small cushion.

The toilets and showers were very clean but they seem to have a paranoia about water on the floor, no glasses allowed in the rooms in case of spillage. All fair enough but then you'd expect some form of mat on the shower floor, how are you supposed to get out of the shower without getting the floor wet?

All in all it was a pretty good experience and I would consider staying there again although it is quite expensive for a hostel.

BarcelonaGarden, Gerente at Barcelona Central Garden Hostel, responded to this reviewResponded July 7, 2013

We usually don't respond to any reviews, but this time is very different as it unfairly puts our honesty into question (probably it was not his intention of this guest, but unfortunately that doesn't help us). On June 27, at 1.02 pm we received a query regarding the payment made at the arrival. The receptionist, who was only one-week new in the job, mistankenly charged the full amount of the stay instead of the Pending Balance (she should have deducted the 19,14€ deposit paid by card in February)-
Only 1 hour and 40 minutes later, we responed apologizing and promissing that we would refund the money as soon possible. We explained that we had already been trying to revert the payment on the card terminal but unfortuantelyit didn't work, so we promissed that we would go to the Bank on the next day, on June 28th. As promissed, next morning we went to the Bank, and waited until the Director received us. He said he would help us, but explained the operation would take 2 or 3 working days. Effectively, as there was a weekend in between), the money was finally taken from our account on July 3rd (therefore 3 days later). That day we emailed our guest to inform about the success of the operation.
This comment was particularly sad as on June 28th we had a 2-day trip planned with our 5-year-old niece. Unfortunately on 28th we were forced to cancel the trip as we had to remain in Barcelona to speak to the Director in person. That 2-day-trip was supposed to be the family's "vacation", something that we had planned a long time ago as we can't normaly leave the hostel unattended. We can't believe we cancelled our trip to fix this problem as soon as possible, and to receive such a review in compensation.
It is true that Maria, our new receptionist made a mistake. But it also true that our hostel did everything that was humanly possible to refund the money as soon as possible. We really don't understand why somebody would write this while we were in the process of fixing our staff's mistake.
We would like to remark that the 20€ deposit for the keys was refundable. This was the only way to prevent our keys from being lost easily. This is a very safe hostel (we had zero incidents since we opened more than 3 years ago) and we want to keep it that way. Also it would have been nice to mention that our hostel was one of the cheapest hostels (if not the cheeapest) in the center of Barcelona. You stayed in a very spacious Superior Twin room, and the price you paid was slightly more expensive compared to the cost of a bed in a shared dorm of any other hostel.
This is a small hostel, that offers many extra services (24 hr/reception, trilingual staff that will assist guests everytime it is need it, beautiful common areas, bathrooms and kitchen that are cleaned several times a day, personalized check ins, airconditioning in all of the rooms, etc)- If you consider all of the hidden costs, you will realize that the price paid was fair enough. As a matter of fact, our hostel didn't even cover the expenses during the whole past winter. Some other hostels preferred to close and some others get rid of part of their staff. We don't know what we are going to do this following winter yet.
