I booked this hotel five months before we travelled, yet when we arrived they were still juggling rooms to get us in. I had requested a high floor non-smoking room so it was not a great start to get a room on floor 1 of 5, and when I opened the door I was hit with the stench of cigarettes and smoke, so back to reception to get another ‘non smoking’ room !!!
Room itself was quite claustrophobic with just one small window in the corner which opened out to view, what can only be described as, a large ventilation shaft – bad point
Wardrobe was positioned against the wall and held in place by a small cabinet, without the cabinet I am sure the wardrobe would have fell over it was so rickety - bad point
TV, I could not get to work till 2 hours before I was due to leave, when complaining at reception for the second time, and mentioning the word ‘Discount’ on my booking they eventually got the TV working. I am quite good with gadgets, but this has three different input modes which you had to change yourself, and the correct mode was set to a channel which just said “Sin Aerial” so you may see why I could not watch it, it was basically a Spanish digibox so no English, German, Italian TV, no news, so not very good for a major European city – bad point
Air conditioning, was very large and noisy, doubt you will sleep with it on, but it did work, so that’s a – good point
Bed, was bigger than I expected for a single room, but if it was a double then I would have been disappointed with it, but it was comfy for one – good point
Bathroom, had toilet, sink and shower, but you have to be a contortionist to get at the toilet as the gap between the sink and the door is quite small and you have to squeeze through this gap to get at it. Shower runs off the taps on the wall, and is in a weird tiny bath, too small to sit in, so cant be used as a bath (and taps only work the shower) its like a shower tray with two foot steep sides, weird. You did get some small soaps, and some shower foam!! in a dispenser, but there was no hairdryer, and the towels that were provided were that thin you could almost see through them, and probably as absorbent as the loo roll – bad point
Breakfast was 5 euro’s, mine was included so I went down, it’s a basic cold buffet affair for foreign breakfasts, cheese slices, ham slices, yoghurt, juice, bread and croissants, no hot food, no eggs, bacon, sausage etc. After a certain time they stop replacing items so if you want full choice get there early. Also the hotel has a slim lift but it goes from 0 to 5, and the breakfast room is in the basement, so if you have mobility issues, or in a wheelchair, you will not get to the basement – bad point
Location for me and my three mates was good, about 150 yards from the paralel tube station (west entrance) and you can get all round Barcelona from here, one small point is that it is up a side street, and this may be a bit oppressive for smaller, maybe female tourists, but basically – good point
I am no snob, and this was for a cheap weekend away with some mates, meeting others on a stag do, but if going again, I think I would spend a little bit more and get somewhere with hot breakfasts, decent furniture and towels, and a window that looked out over Barcelona…
