Description: With amazing views of the Port Vell Marina, Cal Pinxo is decorated to be carefully informal in all the soft blues and aquas of the sea and sky. The restaurant has broad windows and a terrace directly looking out onto the Mediterranean. After postres, you can take a stroll on the marina or in the Barceloneta. The menu is classic Catalan with special emphasis on things that swim. Start with a plate of fresh clams then do not miss their paella, then maybe some creme catalana or egg flan. Service is professional and quick, and there's a children's menu, too.

“Waste of Money”
Reviewed October 10, 2012

Our hotel recommended this restaurant as a great place to eat paella in a beautiful marina setting. It was a Sunday evening and reservations were made for us by the hotel staff. From the beginning, my friend and I were ignored. Even though we had a reservation it took a while to seat us even though we could see many empty tables, then even longer to take our order. It seemed that no one was assigned to our table and/or no one wanted to wait on two senior ladies. We wanted a bottle of wine but our waiter wasn't helpful or responsive to our questions. He acted as if we were a bother and even seemed to pretend that he didn't understand our questions. We did manage to get a decent rose. Our paella dinner was just so so - not much flavor and a small amount of seafood. Definitely not one of the better paellas we later had in Barcelona in smaller less assuming places. We waited and waited for our check and finally had to get up and find someone. Probably the worst food experience we had in Barcelona. Too expensive for the food and the service we had. Setting isn't everything. I would definitely not recomment this restaurant.

This place has the best Paella in Barcelona, visiting this place is a must

There are 2 branches, one in the new and one in the old port. I recommend the old port

“Pricey restaurant with a great location and pretty good food”
Reviewed September 30, 2012

Located along the marina boardwalk, if you're sitting outside on a nice day you really couldn't ask for a more pleasant view. Boats, the harbor, Montjuic in the background - nice! However, you are going to pay for the priviledge ... prices are some of the highest we saw on our trip. The food makes up for it, somewhat - very good gazpacho, some of the best fried calamari ever tasted, and decadent desserts. Service is so-so; I think waiter intentionally substituted a much more expensive wine when out first choice was unavailable without advising us of the price differential. I'd suggest a pass on this place -- there are so many other chices available, you don't need to settle.

“Not worth going”
Reviewed September 18, 2012

My boyfriend and I were walking around on our first night in Barcelona looking for somewhere to eat. We came across the string of restaurants along the marina and took our time looking at all the restaurants before deciding on Cal Pinxo. We knew that this was a touristy strip which can be risky, but we could not have imagined how terrible the experience was (we had not consulted Tripadvisor beforehand).

The hostess who sat us was pleasant and that brief exchange was really the only positive. The person who took our drink order was extremely unfriendly and seemed completely disinterested in us. Having never been to Spain before, we were unfamiliar with the different regions and types of wine and asked him for a suggestion for a light and refreshing white wine and told him we didn't want anything sweet. He begrudgingly took a brief look at the menu and suggested a mercat gewürztraminer blend, which anyone with a basic knowledge of wine would know is sweet. When we told him we'd like a few more minutes to decide, he left in a huff. We chose a wine ourselves (which ended up being quite nice) but when he brought it to our table, he left it in the ice bucket without opening it! We thought he would come back shortly to open it, but after more than 5 minutes I politely asked him to open the bottle which he did begrudgingly as if doing us a favour!

We wanted to order the assorted seafood platter to start, but when we tried to order that from the "wine guy" he cut us off and said he didn't take food orders and we'd have to wait for someone else.

Someone who seemed to be our waiter (though we didn't see him again after he took our order) took our order and we asked him if we could start with the platter and have a bit more time to select and order our main dishes. He said that was not an issue and that he would come back. As I said, we never saw him again.

The seafood platter was a mix of clams, cockles, mussels and razor clams steamed in a basic broth. The dish itself was adequate, although some of the shellfish was old (based on taste and appearance). At first, we fully intended on ordering our main courses but no one ever came by. However, after we observed the terrible service everyone was getting (and experiencing it firsthand), we decided not to eat anything else. This decision was confirmed when we overheard the table beside us complain about the seafood paella they had ordered.

Poor service seemed to be a chronic issue. I think the idea of rhis restaurant is that there is a service team, not necessarily any particular server, so that the ratio of team members to tables is increased. However, the obvious problem is that no one knows what other people have done so it's quite obvious that the staff here assume someone else has done A or B (ex. checking if the meal is OK, seeing if you need anything else) and no one ends up doing it.

A long review that comes down to simple advice: avoid this restaurant.
