“An overall nice food experience”
Reviewed November 17, 2011

I went to Abissinia on a Thursday evening, we were 6 people. We had booked before for 7 people, 8:30pm, but arrived at 6, at 8:45pm, and the waitress/owner was not happy about that at all, and let us know. Which is not very friendly.
Inside, it is very pretty, nice deco as previously said in other comments. It is not recommended for old people though, as the seats are very small stools, and after a while it gets tiring for the back and legs. A client even fell from his seat during the dinner.
I specially do not recommend to take the "group offer" that is basically a rip off. It is 20 euros per person, food as much as you want, 1 drink, 1 tea/coffee, 1 dessert, 1 chupito. So at first glance it looks ok, but here are my thoughts:
- the "normal" menu is at 12.50 euros, with either meet or vegetarian dishes. The portions look completely fine to me (checking with neighbour tables)
- the food makes you thirsty and usually one drink is not enough
- when you ask for repeating the food, they come with 1/8 of the previous dish, saying that usually people order but don't eat it all
Conclusion:
The food in itself is great (not too spicy, for worried people), the tea delicious, I loved the "eating with your hands" experience and also that you share the dishes with your co-eaters. But the service was not friendly and this group offer is definitely not an option. Even if the service insists a lot on you taking that menu, resist!

“Tasty Choices for Vegetarians/Vegans and Meat Eaters”
Reviewed September 27, 2011

As a vegan, it is often quite difficult to find a restaurant that accommodates my vegan palate with tasty, fulfilling fare. Abissinia was not one such establishment. The veggies were delicious. (My husband enjoyed his meat dish, as well.) Further, the owner, Raquel, was so down to earth, warm and hospitable.

“A little bit of Ethiopia in Barcelona!”
Reviewed July 17, 2008

If you're adventurous with your food then definitely try Abissinia! Tucked away in a little back street in Barcelona, this restaurant gives you a taster of the food, atmosphere, art and people of Ethiopia. You sit on low wooden stools surrounded by traditional art work and materials and are served your dishes on a large metal platter.

Large, light, fluffy pancake style breads are used to mop up your selected dishes that are on top of the platter. Both meat eaters and vegetarians are catered for - try the set platters as these give you a selection of everything. Make sure your hands are clean before you start eating as your fingers act as your knife and fork!

Mostly dishes are slow cooked and fairly spicy and include basics such as lentils, vegetables, beef and chicken. Try the tea too, as this is a great palate cleanser!

Certainly an experience for people who enjoy trying flavours from around the world.
