“You need to know this restaurant”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 22, 2012

The restaurants in this part of Spain close midafternoon. Some open again late in the evening. In between it's almost impossible to get a meal. That's a problem if you just arrived from the USA and lived 24 hours on air plane food. No restaurant in Segovia is open, except - the Meson Don Jimeno. And it's not just open, the food is very good! Other travelers took more time to describe it and I can't think of anything else to add. So, other than saying that it's highly recommendable, I leave it at that. It's the place that travelers like us appreciate.

“Fabulous Cochinillo, Delicious Tempernillo”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 22, 2012

My wife and I arrived late in the afternoon in Segovia and feeling a bit puckish, decided to get some lunch. As is the way in much of this country, most eateries are closed by 4:00, not to reopen until 8 or 9. So we had given up on eating and wandered through the cathedral and the shops along calle Daoiz down to the Plaza de la Merced. I was taking photos and my wife wandered on down Daoiz a bit further. Suddenly I hear her voice calling. She'd discovered Meson Don Jimeno just another block down the hill toward the Alcazar.

They close for the day at 7:30 pm, unusual for most Spanish eateries. Ans, she said, they have Cochinillo Asado, the suckling pig dish special to this region. We walked, the only customers and were graciously seated by one of the family who operate the place.

We ordered pâté de Cochinillo, Judiones de la Granja, another traditional Segovian dish and a racion de Cochinillo asado. Along with it they recommended the local winery Zarraguilla's 2009 Tempernillo.

The food was delicious. The pate was a great starter with toasted bread to go with it. But the real hits were the Juiones de la Granja and the Cochinilla.

The Granja is a white bean shaped like a large Lima bean. They were cooked with thick slabs of bacon which melted in your mouth. Simple peasant food that sticks to your ribs and fills that last empty spot so you can go back to work out on the farm.

The Cochinillo was a large chunk of a suckling pig including one of the feet. Roasted to perfection, golden brown and deeply rich. The skin crunched when bitten into and the meat below was moist and melted like butter in my mouth. It was put your head on the table and cry god!

The little local Tintoretto Tempernillo was a perfect match for the rich courses we'd ordered. We hope we can find a case when we get home to the States. Fruity, full bodied and deep berry colored. It sprang from the bottle ready to drink.

The interior decor is cute, not fussy or requiring you to dress up. About a dozen tables with checked table clothes and a half-timbered ceiling make it informal but fun. The food is a very good value as well.

Meson Don Jimeno may be a bit off the normal traffic areas, but Segovia is a small town and it is well worth the few extra steps to try it out. Two big thumbs up! One of the best meals we had on our recent 3 weeks in Portugal and Spain.
