“Just makes you want to be a knight!!!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 22, 2012

Its a great building, resembles perfectly the image we all have of the medieval times. Just great to see and to impersonate yourself as a knight arriving with his horse while the main gate opens!!

“enjoy from the outside”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 18, 2012

Unfortunately you can't enter unless you're friends with the Duchess of Alba or her spawn, but it's very impressive from the outside and nicely lit at night. Take a walk around it for the little plazas around. You may get lucky and get a bad harmonica performance from the local busker, who is also known to bust out jokes from time to time.

I think they are required to open it to the public one day per year so maybe you'll get lucky!

“Impressive Palace”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 10, 2012

The Palace of Monterrey is one of the palaces owned by the Duchess of Alba. It is closed to visitors, but you can see the impressive façade. This palace was built in 1539 by Alonso de Acevedo, who was the third Count of Monterrey and Viceroy of Naples. It is a wonderful example of the Spanish Renaissance style. There were three architects, namely Rodrigo Gil de Hontañon, Martin de Santiago and Pedro de Ibarra. There are turrets at the corners with very impressive Plateresque decoration. The third floor has a gallery called the “paseador de las damas” (the Ladies’ Walk).

It is too bad that it is not open to the public as a museum.
