St. Stephen's Convent (Convento de San Esteban)
Ranked #5 of 99 things to do in Salamanca
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed September 6, 2013

Convento the San Esteban can be admired from the outside and from the inside. History buffs will be interested in the role the Dominican Order has played liking Europe and the New World since the time of Columbus. Touring the church and the cloisters is worth it.

Definitely one of the top attractions in Salamanca, and worth the small admission price. Take time to enjoy the beauty of the inner courtyard and the many other places within the convent. A must.

This is one of the must sees on a trip to Salamanca. The facade is incredibly impressive, with enough carvings to look at all day if you chose. There is an explanation of what you're looking at once you get inside, but this isn't very useful if you forget the various details like we did. It does look great in the evening sun though and is very photogenic.

Anyway, the inside of the monastery is very beautiful, with great cloisters and columns. The pantheon of the theologians isn't much to look at, and the staircase, while interesting, isn't that noteworthy. Upstairs, there is a small series of exhibits about the involvement of the Dominicans in South America, which didn't appeal.

The actual church is somewhat underwhelming. It is huge and the choir stalls above only serve to make it look even bigger. However, it just feels empty and cold, with nothing really human about it. It's hard to explain, but the church lacks any intimacy. We didn't enjoy this bit of the monastery at all.

The cloisters and the facade are worth the visit, but I think other churches and convents in Salamanca offer a better all round experience.

Richly adorned façade. Its doorway shows saints, the story of Jesus, and most importantly the stoning of San Esteban, to whom the monastery is dedicated to. It's church is broad with mirrors on the floor to better admire the ceiling and its paintings. Cool pictures can be taken from these angles.

A bit more off the beaten path, the Convent isn't too far away and you will be greatly rewarded for your journey. The main portal to the church would be sufficient enough. It rivals the University entrance in the detail present. But entering is also worth the entrance fee. The cloisters and their chapels are appealing, especially the staircase rising to the choir section of the church. The church itself isn't as spectacular as the New or Old Cathedrals, but easy rates as the third best in the city.
