“Pop in to see the Ribera”
Reviewed July 5, 2013

Really not much to see in this guy but wanted to include some photos to flesh out this item. The only draw really is the Ribera behind the altar. Personally, not one of his best. Sorry.

“A Very Beautiful Church”
Reviewed February 10, 2012

La Purisima Church has a very impressive high altarpiece that has a very large painting of the Blessed Virgin, a work by Jose de Ribera. On either side are Corinthian columns. On top there is a crucifix and images of Mary Magdalene and St. John. The tabernacle has jasper, malachite, lapis lazuli, gilded bronze, and statues in gilded bronze. There are statues of the Count and Countess of Monterrey on the sides of the high altar.

The church was built by the Count of Monterrey Manuel de Fonseca, and his wife Doña Leonor Maria de Guzman, the most important nobles of Salamanca while they were alive. The Baroque church was built in 1641 by Picchiatti and Fandango, architects from Naples.
