Very well run hotel with mini kitchen. It is right across the street from bus terminal. Take Avanca bus-line from Madrid Airport. The staff is very attentive and polite. The hotel is spotlessly clean. This is a good place to stay while doing business or visiting Salamanca; however, it is not a luxury hotel. Plenty of hot water which for showers; this is an important luxury in dry climates. The kitchen has small refrigerator, 2 burner electric stove with small sink. This is nice as most restaurants aren't open for early risers. Buy milk, bread, butter, instant coffee etc. Plan on going out for lunch and dinner. The hotel does have a restaurant but I have not seen anyone really eat there. It is pricey. It seems like people only drink and eat topas there.
Hints: Salamonca is a walker's town. There are taxis and buses but most people walk into the center of city. If you are not a brisk hiker or walker, plan on learning to use municipal buses or taxis. Hotel88 is 15 minutes brisk walk into Plaza Mayor. Plaza Mayor is the center for everything cultural and historical.
Eating Hints: Due east of Hall88, about 3 short blocks is Telekabob. This is small family owned Turkish cafe. Great inexpensive food. The menu is limited but there Kabob style chicken and beef sandwiches are 3.5 euros, There salads are great: 3 euros or with cheese 3 1/2 euros. 2 beers, a salad and 2 kabob sandwiches: $ 14 Euro.
For finer dinning, go toward plaza major. Always look for placard outside Menu Del Dia. This where you find freshest and most economical meals. If you don't look for Menu Del Dia on outside, you will pay much more off of menu inside.
Avoid Cuarto Gatos (4 cats)Restaurants: unhygienic conditions:
Avoid Plaza 23 restaurant on the plaza. Yes, it has a nice view of plaza at night but food is only okay. but you can view the plaza from the outside at no charge. They tagged on 12 Euros just for bread for which nobody else charges. I paid 3 times what comparable restaurants would charge.
There is a restaurant something like: Mason Abracka??? but the 14 euro steak dinner is enough meat for 2 men. It is fire flamed as you watch. Restaurant off of the Plaza Mayor. South of plaza there is a money changing business. Go past money changer toward the cathedral. Avoid the money changer office as it will cost about 15% commission. Debit card ATM are cheaper and are everywhere.
I hope this helps.
