La Posada Regia

Reviewed July 15, 2013

Posada Regia is right on the corner of the busy pedestrian street and the edge of the bar and restaurant area. Fine, but it has a downside. As the building is ancient - and very cozy for that - the noisy bar guests will keep you awake until the early hours even on the third floor where the rooms do not have real windows, only small shutters 2 meters off the floor. The doors are also a bit a jar so you neighbours' comings and goings are clearly audible. But the rooms are well-equipped and beautiful. Air conditioning costs extra, and so does breakfast, both are well worth their price. Garage parking is costly, street parking is possible and free from Sat. afternoon until Monday morning. (Try Calle Ramon y ... and side streets)

Room Tip: Avoid third floor, low ceilings, shutters or skylights for windows.

We stayed here after a night at the Leon Parador. This place is much more fun and representative of a comfortable, old hotel. Ask for a corner room overlooking the street.
The attache restaurant is also fine and worth a trip.

We traveled to Leon to begin the last one hundred kilometers of the Camino. The first night we stayed in the Parador which was elegant but not centrally located. The second night we stayed at La Posada Regia with our group (the wonderful "On Foot In Spain"). Our room was charming corner room overlooking the street on the third floor. The hotel is very old (dark wood & the like) but comfortable and had everything we wished. It has its own restaurant as well that serves traditional delicious spanish fare.

If you like real old you will love it. If you don't like carrying your suitcases you will hate it. If you like variety in rooms you will love it -- some are small, others large. Differences abound. Definitely NOT for handicapped. If you like being close to center of town you will love it. If you don't like creaky stairs you will hate it -- yellow pine stairs in main building are hundreds of years old with square nails. Wi-Fi very sketchy -- had to go to reception area to get it to work. Once in the room there are all the modern conveniences. But look up at the ceiling and you will view 500+ year-old wooden beams... Opening the windows might require standing on a chair. But if you like the sounds of the neighborhood you will love it...If you don't like the noise of the city you will hate it... It's a love-hate relationship...

Room Tip: Ask to look at the room first -- rooms vary widely.

The lady at the reception was very kind and helpful. They have a good arrangement with a nearby underground parking. We got a charming, colourful room under the roof, so we weren't bothered by any noise. The downside was that there was only one (small) high window so we couldn't look outside. We had a minibar (so we could cool our beverages), wifi and a bath. We didn't take breakfast here because there are lots of good places to eat in Leon.

I got a top floor attic room with a window 6 feet off the ground. It was very hot but when I asked for the A.C. remote control I was asked for a further four euros. It gets worse. The electrics fused leaving me with only an emergency light. And the bedlinen was stained. I stayed in several Posada's along the Camino but this was my worst experience. I checked out and move to another hotel.

We arrived mid afternoon and were warmly welcomed by the delightful staff. We went to our room, which was really beautiful. I love the décor. I was wondering if some of the other reviews had been a little harsh, but then other people arrived at the hotel. The noise was astonishing. We could hear word for word what the people next door were saying, and the beautiful wooden staircase turned into a noise machine. I really, really wanted to write a good review for this beautiful hotel and its lovely staff, but the noise was unlike anything I have experienced before.
