Hostal Acanto
Ranked #13 of 34 Burgos B&B and Inns
Reviewed June 3, 2006

The title of my review is a bit tongue in cheek as it took us over an hour to find the Hostal Acanto. The irony was that, although we had sat nav in our car, I didn't make a note of the number of the hotel in Calle Victoria, which turned out to be the main street running through Burgos, and at least a couple of miles long. We first turned right into it, in the town centre, then realised our mistake, turned left and drove right past the hotel, which is quite difficult to spot, but after we ended up in open country we realised our mistake!

Anyway, when we eventually found it, and parked in the underground garage which is around the back, we were very impressed with the standard of accommodation. In my opinion, the decor was 4 to 5 star, though it didn't have the little extras, toiletries etc you normally associate with this standard. Also, I was under the impression there was air conditioning, though we couldn't find any controls and it was a little on the warm side. If you are intending to stay in the summer, I would certainly check this out. Also, let them know in advance if you require parking as the hotel has limited spaces.

The staff were very friendly and helpful, and the breakfast perfectly adequate. I would certainly recommend it for an overnight stay - we were travelling from Santander to Malaga.

The hotel is some way from the centre, but as others have mentioned, there is a regular bus service. We felt like stretching our legs as it was a fine evening, and it took us 35 minutes to walk to the Plaza Mayor. The centre of Burgos is enchanting - I loved the avenue of pollarded trees. Don't miss the statue of El Cid and the beautiful cathredral. There were loads of restaurants to choose from, many of them offering regional dishes.

Clean, modern, Walk out the door and catch a 0.70 € bus to the wonderful city centre of Burgos (and get happily back at most any time) GAMONAL is the bus name to go for. Secure undergound parking at nominal cost is a huge bonus for us motorcyclists. Brilliantly and helpfuly (english speaking) run by Ana and Gregorio for their parents. I had a dead rear tyre and needed a very specific replacement, thanks to their ringing round for me (at no cost) i got the replacement i needed in Aranda de Duero. The ability to internet connect my laptop without any extra charge was another big bonus. It may not be as exclusive as city centre Hotels but value for money i think is exceptional! I shall be going back next year for sure and will make this where i now stay in Burgos (I have been going every year for 6 years) Duncan Gough.

The Hostal Alcanto is quiet new having been open only about 5 months. The rooms are excellent. Every thing is new. The beds are very good the bedding is very good and if you are likely to get cold there is more in the wardrobe. The rooms are tastefully decorated. A lot of care and attention has gone into the decoration and facilities in the rooms. The bathrooms are excellent. As with any new building there are teething problems but nothing that is going to spoil your stay. The Hostal is family run and ALL of the staff are excellent and they made every effort to speak in english. The owner and his sister both have taught english in the UK. When we were at a loss to find a good restaurant the receptionist sent us to one of the best restaurants I have ever eaten in (La Plancha).
We were given good directions to places of interest to the point where I did not need a map.
We stayed two nights at the beginning of our trip and then one night on our return.
As a former General Manager of a 4 star hotel in the UK I would rate it as excellent andon a par with the best hotels I have stayed at. I will certainly return to the Alcanto on my next trip and stay longer. The cost was very good value for money and included breakfast which they will extend beyond 10.30am if you ask them.
The Hostal is on Calle Vitoria which is part of the Camino de Santiago very close to a 15th century pilgrim church. The location, about 15 minutes out of Burgos but there is a garage to park your car and a very regular and cheap bus service that will take you to the heart of Burgos without having to find places to park.
