The tour is cheap and takes you down into the tunnels where people dug into the castle to poison the well water. Not for the claustrophobic. It is pretty cool. The name "Castillo" is a bit deceiving, since the Castle is now mostly ruins. Nonetheless, it was fun. Plus on the way there is one of the best views of Burgos!

Climbing all those steps to go up the hill took it out of us a little but was well worth the effort. The castle, attacked by Lord Wellington and partly destroyed by the Spanish who didn't want a foreign country to take possession of it, has been superbly rebuilt and is a must for visitors to Burgos. No need to worry too much because also at the top of the hill is a great, trendy cafe with seating inside and out. We sat outside with a lovely coffee. The views from the cafe are breathtaking and you can see for miles as well as being able to look down on the city. We were impressed that the information on all of the castle notices were in Spanish and English. Going down was a lot easier than walking up.

We've been to Burgos a few times, but had never been to the castle as it is a climb up from the city centre and is not really very promoted. It is possible to drive up, there's parking on the road up there, but we walked up, it's a bit of a climb, but there are some gardens on the way, it's all landscaped, and there were some great views back over the cathedral and city. At the top there's a cafe/restaurant with large terrace, where we stopped for a drink after our visit.
The castle itself is not expensive, and there were two entry options, either just going in to walk around the walls and insides for 2.50 Euros, or also including a visit to the underground tunnels, for 3.50. We chose the latter, which I'm glad we did, as apart from the fantastic view, there wasn't a great deal to see in the castle itself, not massively spectacular, and nothing compared with castles in the UK. The tunnels were interesting though, we had to put on hard hats and walk down some steep stairs to access it (not for those with clostrophobia, or any mobiliy problems - it was slippery). Inside you are guided through tunnels with interesting history and theories as to why they were built. Again, it's nothing spectacular, but it was quite fun!
