Casa de Manolo Toledo

Very near the cathedral…
but very far from the carpark if you have to cart your heavy luggage in the steep cobblestoned streets…as we found out. The trick being to arrive/depart in taxi as traffic is restricted to authorised vehicles in the historical centre. We were surprised by the room, downstairs (we straightaway dubbed it ‘the cave’) with 2 beds but the large one felt more like a large single, so hubby and I had to sleep in separate beds, eventually we got to like it as it was by far the biggest room of all. Bathroom small but perfectly formed, breakfast (with a view) basic but sufficient except for the coffee always running out - after the first day, we made sure we arrived early enough to be able to get one refill (kitchen downstairs ? why not getting a bigger urn than a single thermos…would make for happier customers). Hosts gave us 2 good addresses for restaurants, including our favourite in Spain : La Abadia. Still v. good value for money.

We were completely surprised by this lovely little inn. The building was gutted and rebuilt to create the inn a few years ago, there are many interesting decorative touches, rooms are small but clean, and there was a very nice "rooftop" breakfast dining area with a porch. It is conveniently located just behind the Cathedral. The staff all spoke English and were very helpful with suggestions.

This hotel is not a 5 star luxury resort but it has all that you require for a comfortable stay in Toledo. The staff are welcoming and make your stay comfortable. The breakfast is well presented and the eating area is excellent to view the rooftops of the buildings. It's location is perfect for taking in all of Toledo on foot. The beds we had were not the softest we slept in but, nonetheless, it was a good sleep.

Make sure to pay the extra $20 for a larger room with a double bed if traveling alone. The rooms have names -- mine was La Carpenteras -- very nice and very quiet. I stayed 3 nights -- the last night I had to move to a $30 very tiny room and bed. -- La Alataras -- with a noisy street outside. Staff was friendly and helpful.
Toledo is definitely worth more than a day trip. I easily spent 2 full days. The El Triebel restaurant was great for both the main meal during the day and the Tapas at night.
If driving, take the time to study a map of the area to get a picture of where you will be going and to understand the directions. GPS systems are often wrong and Via Michelin computer directions tell you by street names. There are NO street signs. It took me one hour to find the parking garage recommended by the hostal. You have to search for the signs to the garage and keeping following them exactly. Once you find it, the walk to the Hostal is clear ...but carry a small suitcase and leave heavier things in the car.
