We knew that this church contained an El Greco painting. We paid the minimal entrance fee and suddenly, in the entrance hall, there was "The Funeral of the Count of Orgaz!" The painting is absolutely amazing. It has movement, colour and a great wow factor. We stood and gazed at it for some time before entering the church. The church itself was not very appealing. All the statues appeared in your face and had a style I found repelling. However, the picture behind the altar was very interesting. As I looked, the penny dropped. It was a painting of the moment when Jesus appeared to Thomas who exclaimed, "My Lord and my God!" Of course, it keyed into the name of the church, St Thomas. Worth the visit just to see the El Greco.

The Burial of Count Orgaz makes this stop a must. El Greco's oil on canvas is captivating. No cameras aloud so buy a postcard or book to stoke your memory of this amazing piece of art.

€2.50 admission fee is what you pay to see one fabulous painting..El Greco's most beloved...the burial of Count of Orgaz!!!! This is on the outside of the main entrance to the church and the beautiful gold altar inside the church …are so worth it…even today my eyes are bedazzled by the memory of both the altar and the painting and the sad part is that NO PHOTOS ALLOWED INSIDE .The church is so small and plain on the outside and such a ordinary looking type on the outside…you could so easily miss it..ASK FOR IT…As you walk on from the cathedral (its very close from there) just along the main road look to theLEFT .. it’s at the END of a little sloping street..the entrance is to the back DO NOT BE PUT OFF by the chained and locked front door.GO DOWN THE SLOPE AND TO THE LEFT IS CHURCH. The extra BONUS is the absolutely amazing little shop at the beginning of the street that sells HANDMADE MOORISH TILES for as little as 3 euro a piece…what a find really!!! I went overboard and picked up at least 2 dozen of them as gifts and even got a solid discount!!!

If you care about Spanish art, it is worth the 2,50 EUR admission to see The Burial of the Count Orgaz. There are several other worthwhile sights nearby in this part of Toledo, including the Monasterio de San Juan de los Reyes, Santa Maria la Blanca and the El Greco museum.

Although an interesting church inside, the chains from freed Christian slaves, which are hanging on the outside walls, are far more interesting.
