Not a lot to see - it was being renovated when we visited - but a beautiful interior. I think there is a Jewish History museum a little further down the road. You will need a map to find it as the street signs are a bit erratic.

Toledo was practically the centre of the Spanish Jewry in Christian Spain. At one time the whole of the southwest portion of the city was inhabited by Jews. The Jews were expelled from Spain in 1492. The Sinagoga de Maria de Blanca was built in 1180. It is built in the Mudéjar style, i.e. built by Moorish architects on Christian soil for non-Islamic purposes. The walls are plain white. The roof is supported on aisles of horseshoe arches which make it feel rather like a mosque. It became a church in 1405 or 1411 (some uncertainty there) after it was stormed by a Christian mob led by no less than a saint, namely, Saint Vincent Ferrer. No major reforms were done for the change to Christian worship. We were impressed by the building and its architecture. We were less im-pressed by a nun sat behind a table selling her wares. It seemed vulgar and crass to the point of the obscene.

Some photo opportunities of religious architecture influenced by the Moorish and Jewish history of Toledo. Not one of the highlights of my trip to Spain. Feels a bit "soulless and empty". Maybe there was life here once?

I visited the Synagogue of Saint Mary the White (Santa Maria la Blanca) on a day-trip to Toledo, as part of my 7 full-day visit to Madrid, and enjoyed it a little - whilst there isn't a lot to see, what there is can be pleasing to the eye.

I have compiled extensive individual Trip Advisor 'Trip Lists' for both my day-trips to Toledo and visit to see the sights of Madrid, they are entitled respectively 'Toledo Day-Trip from Madrid Oct 2013' and 'Madrid Attractions (+ Toledo/Segovia Day Trips) : 7 Full-Day Visit Oct 2013'. Please feel free to access them via my TA Profile (by clicking my TA 'name' below the photo on the left of this review) and links in each TL. I hope that they are of interest and use to you and that all of my individual reviews/photos/videos get posted properly; don't forget that videos aren't posted with the review like photos are, so it's best to locate them via my TA profile....

Like most attractions in Toledo, it costs to visit the Synagogue of Saint Mary the White (Santa Maria la Blanca). For my visit I bought the good-value (EU8, available to buy from each attraction - it includes a useful city map) 'Toledo Tourist Wristband' (ticket), which adds 5 other attractions to the paid-for 'visit list'.

I will add info photos of the 'Toledo Tourist Wristband' to this review, along with example photos of the monastery (where flash-free photography is allowed).

Visually, there isn't too much to this attraction - the outside is very understated and the inside is small and quite sparse. Therefore, for me, the most attractive aspect was above - Mostly white, there are nicely-shaped arches and the 'scroll' decorations above.

For such a small attraction, the Synagogue of Saint Mary the White (Santa Maria la Blanca) was busier than I expected so there is obviously some significant history associated with it which I didn't bother to investigate. Visually, there are some pleasant aspects to enjoy - but it won't take you long to do that....

This is quite a sad little place in some ways. It's sold to you as a synagogue turned into a church, but there's little real evidence of its life before it became a church, other than some stars of David. The architecture inside is nice, with excellent carvings and columns, which offer good opportunities for photos. There was a small art display when we were there, about the three faiths, but little to explain what it was about. Once you've looked at the columns etc, there isn't that much to look at to be honest.

You can buy a single entrance ticket or you can buy the Toledo card offering entry to many places. We bought the single ticket as our visit was too short to see all the relevant places in the time available. It was surprisingly hard to find on the street, but it is on the left hand side of the square as you look at it, just set behind a wall.
