“Reflects the Character of Toledo”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 8, 2013

We have just returned from a long weekend at the Alfonso VI, which is ideally placed at the highest part of the old town and across the road from the Alcázar de Toledo and minutes from the Calle Commercio [the main shopping street] and local bars & cafes. Don Quixote references are all around, and swords and suits of armour are available at most gift shops, and this reference to 1605 is reflected in the hotel décor. We found the hotel welcoming, clean and tidy and were happy with our room on the first floor. Unlike some other reviews [and perhaps as were were travelling as part of an organised group] we had no issues with the buffet breakfasts as all the tables were laid out ready for us. The evening meal was enjoyable [except the bland vegetarian option - often the case is Spain]. The only real issue is that the local buses which run from around 6.00am to midnight all seem to pass the hotel, so it could be worth booking a room at the back which is quieter. I would be happy to go back to the Alfonso VI, but perhaps not in the summer months.

Room Tip: I would book a room at the back of the hotel.

We took a fly drive holiday, hiring a car in Madrid and driving to the wonderful vibrant city of Toledo. Our hotel, Alfonso VI was perched at the top of the hill opposite the military museum, and a short walk to the park and other amenities. A small hotel, but beautifully run by kind and helpful staff, our comfortable and well appointed room on the first floor had a balcony where we could sit outside looking over mediaeval pan tiled roofs, a small church where bells were rung, yet funnily enough did not disturb us, and a breathtaking view of the distant countryside. As in many Spanish Hotels, there was no courtesy tray, but since I always take my travel kettle, adaptor and provisions, coffee on the balcony, whilst enjoying the early morning sunshine and birds tweeting was a treat. We then headed down to a delicious breakfast, although Spanish Omelette was not something I fancied, although my husband ate two portions! I had what is charmingly called in this Country “continental” breakfast with real juicy Spanish oranges. 2 minutes walk from the hotel is a bus stop for the open top deck tour buses. Do take the trip, it is very cheap and gives a wonderful overview of the City to help locate the points of interest. The Cathedral is a must and free to enter. Take a walk around the perimeter it and see the famous “Lion Gate” and intricate carvings and that is just the exterior, whereas the interior is simply jaw-droppingly fabulous, and holds a myriad historical mysteries to read about and unravel. Think Toledo, think Kings, castles and Crusaders, mediaeval splendour, Knights of old and of Don Quixote and Sancho Panza. Bliss!

Room Tip: If you have a car, off road parking is expensive in an undergound car park. if you don't have a...

I did not book this hotel myself, it was an arrangement by tour. This hotel has a gimmick of Medieval decorations. I was given a room facing the street. The major problem was no air-conditioning. However, there was air-conditioning in the lobby, but not the rooms. I complainted to the reception desk and the manager explained that it was hotel policy to shut down all air-conditioning from 1Oct13 onwards and strongly suggested me to open the balcony doors during my sleep. I told him that the streets were really noisy because you can still see buses passing by after 11pm. Moreover, the curtains cannot be drawn when the balcony doors are opened. Opening the balcony doors are just like showing the public your pjs! Moreover, for security reason, how can you sleep properly in a foreign country with your balcony doors wide open? If you close all those doors, you simply cannot breathe and start sweating even it is October. Even worse, they will force heating into your room and there was no way to adjust that! Not everyone wants heating in October and the others are forced to open the only balcony doors to get fresh air with no sense of security at all. What is in the mind of management of this hotel? Why can't they let the customer to choose between air-conditioning and heating? What is the point of this absurd arrangement?
After spending a horrible night, I would strongly suggest the people to avoid booking this hotel unless their management changes this ridiculous arrangement on air-conditioning policy.

We stayed, at this hotel, for 2 nights in August 2013. Booked the hotel as it's in a great location and within easy walking (from top of Toledo hill) to sights, restaurants, parking, etc.
Used the Rick Steves' Spain book to do our own walking tour, take local buses to see sights outside of main city.
Hotel has 1970s feel - dark wood, medieval/knights theme throughout, AC didn't work(we told staff but nothing was done), wood doors to shared balcony - had to keep these open for air- doors not very safe as they wouldn't lock.
4Euro breakfast was in 'dungeon' basement dining room- roll, juice, coffee. Staff was very pushy and hovered as you ate and until you paid them the 4Euro.
Discounted, inside parking nearby.

This nice hotel in the highest part of Toledo. We weren’t there for long given Air France’s lost luggage fiasco that forced us to go back and forth between Toledo and Madrid. Seemed like a nice hotel in a picturesque town. Was good value for the money.

Conveniently located in the middle of the old city but the rooms are slightly small and dark. I could only find one electrical plug in the room to re-charge my camera etc., it was the hair dryer's plug in the bathroom! Souvenir shop inside the hotel and also next door but buses pass through right in front of the hotel so can be slightly noisy. The dining area has a medieval feel but don't expect much variety at the breakfast buffet.

Hotel in best location in Toledo with great panoramic views a short walk away. Very old traditional furniture make great ambience but while experience let down by extremely unhelpful and dismissive staff! Guy who checked us in cudnt have been mire disinterested!intakes made in reservation. No information given re location or time if breakfast. Did nit tell us the hotel bar and restaurant situated 3 doors along from hotel entrance!
2 people travelling as friends were allocated rooms on different floors in the hotel! Subsequently changed after raising a complaint thi we were initially told hotel was full an nothing could be done. Whilst reallocated rooms on same floor they could not have been further apart! We had booked 6 months previously but were told tour groups had booked 2 years earlier!
Guess what?- at breakfast the following day it was obvious that hotel was far from full. U was also certain that ro next to mine had bit been occupied that night. Having queried this with the duty manager, it was confirmed that, indeed hotel was not full. Unbelievable treatment from earlier reception staff. We did try to change rooms when first guy had gone off duty and a new member of staff was on reception ! We would not return!
