“A night in The Coliseum”
Reviewed November 2, 2012

Santander is a beautiful city on the edge of the Bay of Biscay. We enjoyed our last night in Spain there en-route to the Brittany Ferry back to Portsmouth. The city has a rather challenging one-way system and as my sat-nav did not recognise the Hotel's name or street address, finding the place was not easy. It would be truer to say that we sort of stumbled across it rather than found it.

A good car park under the Hotel means that if you do find it you at least do not have to take your car out again until you leave!

I enjoyed the location; lots of shops, restaurants, cafes and waterfront within 10 minutes walk of the front door. As we stayed on a Sunday night, the Hotel Restaurant was closed as were many of those in the local vicinity. The AsuBio Restaurant at 23 Calle de Daoíz y Velarde was a real find and their Broad Beans with Mussels entree is superb. The fresh Anchovies with roasted pimento starter was also excellent. AsuBio is an easy 10 minute walk from the Hotel.

We took a de-luxe room which was really nice and especially comfortable and it was a pity therefore that nobody had take the trouble to ensure that the shower over bath fitting actually worked. The cost of overnight parking was waived by way of compensation. The staff were helpful and friendly especially the breakfast room maitre d'. Would definitely go back again.

This was the second Silken Hotel that we stayed in on this trip and quality standards are in my view a cut above the average. I will certainly look for this franchise name when next I am travelling in Europe

Stayed here for two nights in September before setting off to explore the Picos de Europa and thoroughly enjoyed it – when we found it! We knew it was not far from the port and somewhere on the one way system but drove round three times before spotting the neon sign up on the top of the building in our side rear view mirror! A more visible sign at ground level might be useful.
No problems at all to report – good room, bathroom and range of complementary toiletries. Staff helpful and polite, excellent service in the dining room and breakfast particularly good. Underground car park is secure which is very important in a city when you have it stashed to the gunnels with all your packing for a fortnight. It does come at a cost though which is a bit steep (€16.50 a night) but maybe this balances out with the reasonable cost of staying here.
Our room was at the front of the hotel overlooking the busy street but we were not disturbed by any traffic noise and slept well.
The main restaurant was not open in the evening so we ate elsewhere.

Rooms and bathroom are very spacious and clean , breakfast room is ok with good variety of food . Staff was friendly, but surprisingly not very good in languages , it was rather difficult to communicate with them. Location of the hotel is really perfect to discover the town, it's a small town but quite nice.

During our trip this was the 4th hotel we were staying at. We arrived expecting a welcome on par with the other 3 hotels we had stayed. what a dissapointment. The reception staff Angelo was moody and unhelpful. There was no welcome and I felt i was an inconvenience. When we went to our room that was suposed to be Delux with sea view. If tis was a delux room I am so glad I did not book standard. There was no room around the bed at all. Very small, dark and cell tlike. The sea view would have been good if I could have seen out of the window. I had to stand on a chair to look out of the window. We went back down to reception. I was dreading this as he was not helpful in the first place. I questioned the 'delux standard and sea view'. As our room was on the top floor I could see other rooms below with full length windows. I was told that we had a small window becuase we wanted a smoking room. We asked to be moved to a non-smoking room as I could not stay in a room that felt like a cell for even 1 night. We were given another room with full length windows but wit was not given with grace. The new room was clean but still small. The french doors did not open fully as the bed was in the way. the curtains were torn. It all felt a bit shabby. The communial areas felt shabby also. I would not stay in a silken hotel again. Going through other silken hotels websites many of the rooms have small windows and I belive are made to look bigger in the photos

Good for business trip, mot for holiday break.
Rooms fine, clean, but no where to relax. Bar too cold to sit & relax in , even for someone from Ireland!
Breakfast fine. Only personal contact is to check room number.

Great location in the centre of town with a free room upgrade. Room very spacious, clean and well appointed with a seperate lounge and a TV in both rooms. Hair dryer AND telephone in the bathroom which also had a mega shower.
Staff very friendly and helpful. Unlike others I found the wifi to work well and at a reasonable speed. The only downside was that due to our late arrreival there was no secure parking left at the hotel.

Really well located hotel, close to the water front and near to lots of lovely Tapas bars and restaurants. The staff were friendly, letting us check in early and out late, giving us directions, ordering us taxis etc. The rooms were spacious and well appointed with hair dryer, mini bar, wifi etc. We didn't have breakfast at the hotel as it was something like 14 Euro pp but there is a lovely cafe next door where you can have breakfast for about 5 Euro.

We definitely would stay again as it was great value for money.
