“Clean and Convenient”
Reviewed July 19, 2012

We stayed in Santander for one night to check out a beach-side city. The Coliseum was very convenient, just a short walk from the bus station. It was right in the heart of the main shopping area so provided some diversions. Our room was clean and reasonably sized, as was the bathroom. I was a bit surprised that it was more expensive to our hotel in Bilbao which was a bigger city with more to do and see but I guess "seaside" towns are more expensive. There was also a coffee shop in the lobby of the hotel which was nice to have for a quick cortado and pastry before heading out. There is a very nice walk along the pier and through a park just a few minutes from the hotel. This area really enhanced our view of Santander. I should note that the Italian "chain" restaurant, La Tagliatelle, just opened next door to the Coliseum. We found this restaurant chain in other cities and enjoyed good pasta (around 13-15 euro but one dish could easily serve two people) and reasonably priced bottles of wine (@ 8-10 euro).

We stayed here for 2 nights arriving in Santander on the Portsmouth ferry at 6.00pm in the evening. The hotel was quite easy to find and is right in the heart of the town close to the main square and market. We were travelling by car and there was plenty of space in the hotel's underground car park. There are alternatives nearby but we like the security of the hotel garage which costs an extra 15 euros per night.

The staff were very helpful firstly with the car parking and settling in and then recommending restaurants. Bars and restaurants were close by all within walking distance so we didn't use the hotel bar or restaurant. The breakfast buffet was good including both hot and cold food with the only complaint being the coffee machine much too common these days in hotels and they don't make good coffee.

Our room was comfortable, reasonably spacious and very quiet once the window was closed despite the busy surroundings. It provided a good base for us to explore Santander. Previously when we have docked in Santander we stayed at the Hotel Bahia but this hotel was much cheaper and of the same standard and we would certainly use it again.

By mistake we left some important financial documentation in the room after we checked out. I phoned and it had been found and kept at reception and was posted to me in the UK. We were impressed by this.

Went there for business. Free wifi on all rooms. Good bed. Room with awful views but I was not on holiday. Silent at night. The breakfast could be more interesting with more options and a better presentation. Even though there were available gluten free options. The look of the hotel is a it was only working as a few clients where there... not all lights on at the restaurant, no journals available...

Overall, we enjoyed our stay in the Silken Coliseum. It was unfortunate that our bathroom ceiling in the first room leaked but the staff were incredibly professional in dealing with this, and put our minds at rest, and ourselves into a much nicer suite as a result.

Bathroom issue - Unfortunately whilst we were there the bathroom of our first room was leaking from the ceiling which meant that we had to change rooms. The hotel was fully booked so this didn't happen until the following day however, the staff were incredibly professional about the situation and had someone come up to wipe the bathroom floor as the leak began to stop. Later when we came back that night, they had left a tray of chocolates and fruit on our bed. The next day they transferred all of our belongings (including items which we'd stored in the fridge) to the new room whilst we were out. The new room was in fact a suite which had ample space as the bedroom was both much bigger and we actually had a separate room with a sofa and chairs.

Room 1 - not very spacious i.e. did not have additional room for an extra chair which meant we were always sitting on the bed to do things, however it was clean and the bed was comfortable

Room 2 - like room 1 but just much bigger

Wifi - whilst this was free (and therefore I shouldn't complain too much) it was quite slow

Location - brilliantly placed within the town to be able to walk to the harbour area in 5minutes, loads of restaurants, shops and bars all around. Also, only about 5minutes away from the main bus station, although there were no actual signs and the square where the hotel is isn't marked out on maps very well so on our first day we took a bit longer. Also, there is a supermarket just around the corner which came in handy.

We stayed at this hotel for 4 nights in early May 2012
Location - 8/10
A town centre hotel close to shops, waterfront, cathedral and large public squares. About 30 minutes walk to the beaches and main park.
Public areas - 6/10
Being in the centre of town there is no pool or garden area. There is a modern restaurant and a separate bar off the main reception area which has some seating in it. As you would expect in this type of hotel there is no entertainment.
Rooms - 7/10
Reasonable size with arm chair, desk and comfy double bed, all clean and modern. Free Wi-Fi.
Bathroom - 7/10
Reasonable size with shower over bath and plenty of decent towels
Food - 8/10
We only had breakfast; there was a wide variety of food and enough to keep us going until evening
Staff - 8/10
All very helpful and friendly but one or two did not speak English that well
Value for money - 9/10
We paid £64/night. This type of hotel in London would cost 3 times as much
The city - 8/10
Santander offers lots of variety, a city break with shops and grand architecture, a waterfront with a marina, a beautiful public park on the coastal headland and best of all beautifully clean massive beaches on the north side of the city

Room Tip: Ideal for a city break. If you want a beach holiday chose a hotel nearer the beaaches on the norther...

Stayed here for the second time and found it to be a very good and modern hotel. The breakfast was better than most hotels we have ever stayed in before with a wide selection to choose from. The rooms were medium to large in size and were spotlessly clean.

My friends live in Santander and we went to visit them a few days ago. They mentioned a few hotels nearby and we picked the Silken Coliseum after checking them out on Tripadvisor.
Santander is not a very big town- about 200,000 people but its spread out between the mountains and the sea. Its very close to all the main sights and the shopping areas. We had fairly bad weather so we found the location was ideal for sight-seeing and shopping as well as finding places to eat and drink.
The beaches in Santander are lovely too- we ventured down by the beach near Sardegna- and if the beaches are the main allure for you in Santander, it would be better to stay down here. There is a Silken Hotel down this way too.
I personally prefer to stay near the nightlife as its always easy to get out and about during the day but I like to be walking distance to wherever I am staying after a night out.
Check-in was simple and quick. The room itsself was spacious and clean as was the bathroom. We did find the room to be quite warm during the night so we put the aircon on for the following two nights and that seemed to sort that problem out.
The beds are very comfortable and we both slept well. The shower pressure was great too. We didnt notice any noise problems at all from outside.

All the staff were friendly and helpful. We couldnt get the free wifi to work though. We didnt ask for help but rather let it go.

We had a drink in the cafe in the lobby but always went for breakfast nearby. We found Botanico next door good although children under 18 are not served as they have poker machines out back- an unusual Spanish practice. It was only €1.80 for a coffee and croissant. You could choose to stand at the counter as many do or sit at an empty table and be served as we were. This seems to be the local practice.
We found Santander to be very reasonable although as our friends are locals, we didnt eat or drink in any touristy spots. We stopped off in La Casona off the main street for a Martini Rosso and some tapas. Martini is the house special and it is worth stopping by for a breather. We had delicious calamares.
We also stopped off at Bodega Del Riojana for a drink and it is lovely. They serve tapas in the bar and have a lovely dining room at the back. I took a picture and the manager spoke English.

Our friends have a car so we took off outside of Santander one day. We drove to Santillana del Mar which is very pretty as well as Comillas which is near the sea. It boasts the only building by Antoni Gaudi situated outside of Barcelona. It is well worth a visit as its very pretty.

I would stay in Silken Coliseum if I visit Santander again although I would consider the hotels near Sardegna beach if it was going to be very warm and I wanted to go to the beach.

Room Tip: We stayed in 215 on the second floor and when I looked at the fire escape plan, this room and 216 be...
