I visit La Conveniente at least once a year, when I'm back in Santander, as part of a family tradition, and not once have I had a bad experience there. Sure, it can get crowded and it can be frustrating getting a table, but it's worth every second of the wait.
I don't drink wine so I can't vouch for them. However, I do love food and La Conveniente has some of the best typica, real Spanish food out there. Rations are generous: in my last visit we were five adults and ordered one plate of mixed frieds - this was way, way more than enough for everyone and makes for a fine taste of most of the things La Conveniente is famous for. My personal favourites are their morcilla with onion and their "ostrich eggs" (boiled eggs wrapped in bechamel, breaded and fried), but my friends swear by their selection of cold meats, so whatever you choose you'll probably enjoy it. Add to this the lively atmosphere thanks to the piano player and us noisy Spanish people all talking and laughing loudly at the same time, and you get a great evening with great food to boot.
