An interesting place to spend and hour or so. The guide books say to take photo ID but no one asked to see ours. Heavily weighted towards Nelsons only defeat - here in Santa Cruz where he lost his arm. Lots of diaramas, models and guns etc through the ages. Very difficult to find a reference to the last Spanish Civil War - it'a as if they are trying to pretend it didn't happen.

The Museo Militar Regional de Canarias is a short walk from the centre of Santa Cruz. It contains an interesting, if somewhat eclectic, collection of ancient and modern arms, armour, and uniforms.

There are some great models of ships, tanks, aeroplanes and helicopters, plus lots of information on Canary regiments. Central to the museum is the story of Nelson's defeat at Santa Cruz in 1797. The famous canon which shattered Nelson's arm, el Tigre, has been relocated to the new underground exhibition area in Plaza de Espana, but the British flag which Nelson had confidently expected to raise over Santa Cruz remains in the Museo Militar.

There are quite a few explanation panels and labels in English, and you can also ask for an English plan guide at the entrance, but many of the descriptions are in Spanish only, so if you are a non-Spanish speaker, it is best to bring a Spanish dictionary.

If you linger to study all the paintings, drawings, maps, books, weapons, models and WWII equipment, you will need to allow a couple of hours to see everything. However, if you are short of time, you could skim the museum in about 45 minutes.

When I visited in October 2009, the museum was open from 10:00 to 14:00 Tuesday to Saturday, and entrance was free.
