“Great hotel...but not sure it deserves the fifth star...”

It's hard to place this hotel...it is priced like a 4 star hotel, feels like a nice 4 star but is technically a 5 star...so. A bit about my frame of reference; when I travel for fun I often stay in 5 star hotels and for work I often stay in 4 star business hotels I stayed in this hotel for work so will judge it based on that frame of mind...so let's go at it:

The entrance and overall ground floor
The hotel has elements that stand alone are very nice (classic wooden balconies, nicely shown wine cellar in the restaurant) but somehow it all lacks a bit of character. It's hard to describe but it's what I felt...just very clean...maybe a bit empty...

The rooms
I had a standard room...and it was very standard. The bed was nice enough...the room is modern and white. But aside from the lack of identity I found in the entrance it didn't feel "luxurious"...it was a bit plain. But as I said for the price I paid (120 euros per night) this was one of the best hotels I've been at...but typically 5 star hotels are nicer AND more expensive

The overall grounds (gym, spa)
The hotel has a great gym, big with plenty of machines...better than many standalone gyms. The pool is nice enough and the spa looks very nice (only saw it from the outside unfortunately). So overall great!

The restaurant
The place itself is somewhat reminiscent of a large meeting room. The round tables in a large white room...the limited decoration...so the looks are nothing special. The food is simple but flavorful and the service is pleasant (like it is in most of Spain I must say). Overall a pleasant experience although don't expect to feel like you would in the restaurant of a 5 star Parisian hotel (so not very refined food...but not very expensive food either!)

In conclusion
Great value! I can understand why they have the 5 stars (the great gym, the pool, the spa) and dont get me wrong the value is amazing...but, if you are used to staying in 5 star hotels you might be a bit disappointed with the lack of personality, the simplicity of the food in the restaurant and the rooms. I know that at 120 euros I would surely recommend it!!

My wife Margaret and myself have just returned from a very enjoyable week in Santa Cruz Tenerife,we stayed in the five star Iberostar Grand Mencey Hotel on a bed and breakfast basis which consisted mainly of a large and varied selection of continental choices with a less varied choice of hot foods ,never the less very enjoyable
We occupied a standard room which was large and comfotable with a good size balcony and a view across the roof tops to the harbour.All linen was changed daily,and the room was spotless.
The hotel is situated just to north of the old town very close to a very large park which is perfectly maintained with ample wildlife and a large selection of trees more like an arboretum than just a park, the main shopping area is between5 and 10 minute walk depending on ones speed,but plenty of coffee shops and cafes to break your journey or just people watch iin the many pretty squares dotted around.
There is a very good food/fish market to visit preferably on a Friday or Satuday morniing,we found an exellent Italian resteraunt about 3 mins walk from the Hotel with an exellent menu (www.decanio3.es)
This is not a beach holiday but the hotel has 2 pools Gym and spa. Overall an exellent holiday

I stayed in for just 2 nights in March 2013, it was clean and kept to a high standard, wifi was a little slow but free, staff were very friendly especially at breakfast where nothing was too much trouble.

Santa Cruz is a nice green relaxed city with Ramblas like Barcelona and this hotel is on the Ramblas, next to the Parque Sanabria and a short dive from, the centre of town, UNESCO World Heritage University Town La Laguna and above all the best beach in the Canaries: the Saharan Las Teresitas. A great location for a short city break or perhaps a two part holiday with Puerto de la Cruz. You need a 4 wheel drive to explore the nearby Anaga mountains.
The hotel has superb service almost on a par with Majorca's Formentor in its heyday: especially good were the dinners and the cocktail bar for staff friendliness and quality of food and drink. The grounds and function rooms are magnificent for a city hotel. Tons of 12 euros a day under hotel parking & a disabled space next to the Spa is never used, if you have a blue badge. Lifts every where and a shallow slope in the grounds.Wi fi is free, but no tennis courts.
The downside was like the Formentor: no indoor swimming pool only a spa pool you had to pay for and the hotel swimming pool was also unheated. We did not try the pool side restaurant/cafe/bar. Breakfast while friendly (great hot chocolate, ok coffee make your own tea) was good mass catering, but not excellent and natural like the Formentor's were.

Room Tip: Get a superior garden room with huge balcony!

Recently stayed here for 10 nights. I thought the hotel design, decor and gardens were all beautiful. I did not know what to expect of the area but was pleasantly surprised by the town (apart from the port area - bit grotty) which is large, and wanted a relaxing holiday so it did not matter that there did not seem to be that much to do.
I thought the staff were really good, all very polite, smart, and smiley. The range of drinks in particular was very impressive. We did not eat in the restaurant at dinner but looked a little fancy for me, and not sure there would be much for me to eat as a vegetarian. We did have small supper in the bar one evening though which was good.
We stayed on a bed and breakfast tariff and had large breakfasts each day so that we did not need lunch, and would eat out at nearby restaurants (a slight challenge to find nice ones) in the evening. I agree with what others have said, the hot food is not kept hot enough. I enjoyed the rest of the choice though, everything from fresh or dried fruit, yoghurts, delicious pastries, lots of bread choices, salad/cheese/cold meats etc., and cereals.
My one (minor) complaint is that yes, the hotel does seem slightly businessy. This did not really bother us as just there for some winter sun and to read by the pool. However, they could have communicated/advertised events on the island/in the hotel better - e.g. the carnival events in the town, and activities/acts happening in the hotel. I was also unclear about whether as a guest I could use the indoor swimming pool/gym facilities - they could improve upon their internal communication with guests. But I really enjoyed my stay and hope to return!

Room Tip: Based on previous reviews chose a garden view and pleased we did, it was nice to sit on the balcony...

This is a very nice hotel in a beautiful spotlessly maintained building. All of the hotels facilities including our room were of a very high standard and you could not fault anything in terms of the fabric of the place.
What was distinctly lacking though was any warmth of welcome or smiling face of service.From our checking in we found the service to be efficient but not in any way friendly. I am talking here of service such as on check in. As I approached the check in desk after a reasonably long journey I was welcomed with 'Hello your name please?' and a fairly swift efficient check in. Not a word such as 'Welcome to the Iberostar Grand' or 'How was your journey',
The buffet breakfast was high quality food, if a bit limited in choice, but tepid and no where near hot every day. I noted that other reviewers had raised this when checking reviews prior to our visit so hoped this would have been attended too but it clearly has not been. And its not a 'borderline' call most of it is just not hot.
During the entire course of our weeks stay through several interactions with staff not one word of pleasantry not one enquiry as to 'how was your day?' or 'are you enjoying Santa Cruz?,'Are you aware our Carnival is on right now?' Nothing of this nature in a whole week.
But just to repeat to be balanced and fair,everything we asked for was handled effectively in a businesslike manner and in some ways this is more important than warm words.
It seemed to me in summary that this hotel does not really welcome tourists and is perhaps more focussed on the business traveller,but even they will still require a hot breakfast

we recently spent 7 nights at this hotel in a superior double room, with breakfast and evening meal included. The hotel is very stylish, newly and harmoniously renovated, very clean and elegant. A very nice room, comfortable bed , bathroom a little small but adeqate, with separate toilet. A nice -sized balcony with chairs and small table. Easy to work safe and super-sized T.V.. The garden is generous, well-kept, with a large attractive pool and plentyof lounging chairs.
We had excellent buffet breakfasts and delicious 3-course-meals (each course with a choice between two dishes). The service was good and the staff all friendly. All in all we can highly recommend this hotel- great value for money too.
