Absolutely a top hotel with spot clean and nicely decorated interior as well as a brand new and stylish spa, gym, pool area. A great bar, a touch of history grand hotel flair and fast and efficient staff - nothing to complain about.

Hotel star ratings are based on many criteria but are not reliable measures of taste and design. There's something about being branded "luxury" that automatically suggests a certain vulgarity. For example, what does the presence of a casino suggest other than a certain kind of seediness?

Let's start with the many positives. Rooms are light and airy and well appointed with a hugely comfortable and generous bed and a pleasing neutral design. The communal spaces are also immaculate, sympathetic and well-judged. The restaurant is charming, there are many excellent exterior spaces and the Mencey's facilities are extensive. So far, so good.

It's the details that niggle. The gratuitous use of TV screens to constantly "up sell" room upgrades and other sundries is particularly egregious. In fact, there's a constant air of the hotel trying to fleece and extort, from the parking to the minibar. Breakfast was largely enjoyable although on the very rare occasions that I choose a cooked item from a hotel buffet I'd rather it wasn't tepid.

I know I may be swimming against the tide here but if a hotel has rooms that do not have a bath can it not be compulsory to discuss this at check-in? Apparently a superior room in a five-star establishment still cannot guarantee more than a shower. Talking of rooms, you will be very disappointed unless you pay for the upgrade to a garden view. There is also issue of the hotel bar; small and soulless and inexplicably selling wines (standard and fortified) that are frankly unpalatable. Obviously margins come first. And finally there's the little matter of the turtles in the water feature. What conceivable reason does a hotel have for maintaining wildlife captive? For the amusement of spoilt children and simple adults? That's money for you.....it can't buy class.

We transferred to the Mencey hotel after the Botanico hotel cancelled our reservations 48hrs before our flight.Due to my parents having mobility and sight impairments , I spend a lot of time finding the correct hotel to meet there needs. But did not have the time to do this due to the Botanico cancelling.
However the rooms are very clean and bright, all rooms vary, so needs can be met. TIP book room over looking garden as some near a busy road.not all have balconies either.
They have underground garage parking attached to the hotel with direct access to the hotel.
The staff in all areas are some of the friendliest and helpful I've met.
Breakfast some mornings very good other mornings the hot buffet food was not hot
The cold buffet was always good.
We did not use the spa as the pool had ladders for accesses and my parents are unable to use them.
People who this hotel would suite. business ,health conscious ,or thous who want to have a quite hotel away from the tourist hordes .

Room Tip: Make sure you book a garden room as our rooms next to busy road .

We stayed here for a week in January 2013, and found it an excellent hotel. The room was fine, overlooking the garden, and the location great - the park nearby is a splendid place to walk, while much of Santa Cruz is easily accessible. We used trams and buses to explore other cities in the north. The gym was very good, though opened late at weekends. Others have commented on the noise from the kitchens - would be good if something was done to reduce this. Otherwise, no complaints and we would certainly use it again.

Room Tip: The rooms overlooking the garden are quiet (apart from the kitchen noise)

I stayed here with my husband for 5 nights over Christmas and was very disappointed with the whole experience. I am a travel agent and I would certainly not be able to sell this hotel to clients looking for a 5 star experience for a number of reasons.
Firstly we had booked a deluxe garden view room on the recommendation of a collegue who had visited the hotel. I emailed in advance requesting a high floor and a sunny evening balcony. However on arrival we were given a room without a balcony in the corner of the building which was obviously only used when interconnecting rooms were required (the door was difficult to close, the light flickered and the toilet cistern kept running the first night - obviously the room is not used too often). I asked reception the morning after we arrived to change us to the room we thought we had booked but were told the hotel was full. Not good enough!
The breakfast experience was poor. No freshly squeezed juices, tinned pineapples and danone yoghurts. When the cava ran out (it was Christmas) neither it nor the glasses were replaced. There was a queue to get into the breakfast room for over 10 minutes on some mornings.
Our room had poor generic toiletries and no bath robes or slippers.
The hotel has 261 rooms but I counted less than 40 sun loungers by the pool.
I had planned to tell the receptionist at check-out about our experiences but unfortunately, unlike most hotels, I wasn't asked how my stay was, I was just told I was free to leave!
The hotel is not 5 star in my opinion. I personally would stay elsewhere when I go back to Santa Cruz and would recommend that my clients do the same.

Stayed there only one night on may way to airport. Very nice hotel, seems to be rather new built. I had a go at the restaurant where we found a very friendly staff, delicious food and some really tasty wine. Rooms are spacious with all the amenities required. Mini bar is well stocked, internet is available for free. It was very enjoyable, albeit a brief stay.

I stopped at this hotel for one night in January 2013, I was early at check in and was informed that the room booked had a problem, I was immediately allocated a suite with all amenities.
The service was excellent, the choice of breakfast is outstanding, the staff were very helpful and for me the location is great as it is within 15 minutes walking to the center of Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
I would certainly stay at this hotel again if the occasion arises.
